Title: English Level Test
Post by: Chris on March 21, 2013, 07:07:06 AM
I came across this the other day and tried it for myself and got a C2 as you might imagine, I then gave it my wife and she got a C1, very good, so I wondered how our members here and their wives/GF's would do also.

English Level Test (http://www.languagelevel.com/english/index.php)

You have A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. A is "Basic User", B is "Independent User" and C is "Proficient User".

I managed a C1 - mind you for a dyslexic Yank one needs to think as some questions are framed in the Queen's English.

C2. Didn't seem to get anymore difficult as the test progressed. Wifey C1. She got confused on a couple of questions.

Well done  tiphat

Thank you, Chris. My English has improved dramatically since I moved to the US.

I think that RUA could use some psychological self-tests too.  :scared0005:

I wouldn't want my fiancee to take this test until she has spent some time in an English speaking environment. Me...C2.

I would have been greatly surprised if your score was anything else.  Your English is excellent.

jamaica the test isn't very difficult. At best I'd put its level of difficultly at grade 12, certainly not college level English.

More like 8th grade English, but then I am older than almost everyone here and received my education in a strict Catholic prep school, where, unlike in today's American government-run schools, education, to a high standard, was the mission.

I'll ask my wife to do it too.

Curious algorithm.

My wife did it, and although she chose a couple of different answers to what I did, she still got a C2. Her alternative answers were not wrong, and still made perfect sense, but I would say my phraseology (choices) were more correct.

As an experiment, I had my eight year old boy try it today. He also chose a couple of answers, that while not wrong, were not the best choice. He also got a C2.

I took the Spanish test on the site. Used to have a decent grasp of it 20 years ago, but haven't used it much in the last 20 years. Still managed a B2.

Reading and remembering verb conjugations in a language will be much easier than writing, speaking and listening correctly. This might explain the slightly higher rating for some.

Take the TOEFL exam and see how you rate, yes even you natives. I think you'll find it a bit more challenging and reflective of your real level. I'm always impressed with non-native speakers who do well on it. Be careful natives, it might give you a wake up call :)  :P.

Here's a decent sample of part of the test, which is equivalent to a 12th grade level.

Some of us beleive that Jesus will help us ~ but even for a year of doing penitence he won't help you with German.

I don't actually believe he will help me ever as I don't believe that he is anything noteworthy as I am not some Christian schmuck, it is just another saying not that you'd ever understand them.

I got B2 level, which is wrong. I know that I don't have this level because I haven't learn any English grammatica, never.
Moreover this test can't show your real level of the language as there isn't any writting exersise and it is too short and easy, and it is definitely not for a native speakers.
In Netherlands we have staats exam NT2 programma 2, which is equal to B2 level and if it was like this test everyone would past it without any problem...but it isn't.
This exame you suppose to do in two days and it takes hours, however, there isn't enough time even to check your writting....or read anything properly, because there is a lot.
C2 level is academical, you suppose to have very good education to get this level, because it depends on your thinking level. So if you can write perfect article for news paper then might be you have one, but if you are able to write only at some forum....you can take a few more simple test and think highly about your language ability.
Good luck!
