Title: Favorite Russian Movies
Post by: Gorky Guy on April 29, 2007, 06:07:39 PM
Brill, Manny. 'Сам ты Наташа' should be compulsory viewing for any self-respecting sex tourist. The tune is quite catchy too. Naturally, Mrs Gorkster hates it.

What are your favorite Russian movies?

My absolute favorite is "A Zori Zdes Tikhie" or in english, "The Dawns Here Are Quite".  One of the first films for the very beautiful Russian actress Olga Ostroumova.

Set during the Great Patriotic War, a gunner Sergent (played by Yuri Sorokin)  must go and investigate the report of a fascist reconnaissance patrol in his sector.  He takes with him 5 female soldiers.  They discover that instead of a patrol, it is a reconnaissance in force and they are seriously outnumbered.  One-by-one the 5 women soldiers die heroic deaths stopping the fascist paratroopers.  After the war, their sacrifice is remembered by the surviving Sergent.

It's an OUTSTANDING flick!  Here it is on amazon.com

I haven't seen that many Russian films, but I really liked "Burnt by the Sun"

 http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Burnt_by_the_Sun/60010187?trkid=189530&strkid=1698194744_0_0

Col. Sergei Kotov, his wife Maroussia and daughter Nadia are enjoying life at their idyllic country estate when a mysterious man arrives, shattering their hopes for a peaceful existence. Mitia, who once was Maroussia's lover, seems perfectly charming at first -- but it soon becomes clear he has a sinister agenda. Nikita Mikhalkov's powerful portrait of viciousness during the Stalin era won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

I`ll just post the ones you can order on Netflix:

1) BURNED BY THE SUN (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Burnt_by_the_Sun/60010187?trkid=189530&strkid=706357786_0_0) (Utomlyonnye Solntsem)
Portrait of viciousness during the Stalin era won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

2) Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Moscow_Does_Not_Believe_in_Tears/60035718?trkid=96185) (Moskva Slezam ne Verit).
An Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, this drama centers on three women struggling to establish themselves in Moscow. Their pursuit of professional and domestic bliss begins in 1958, then jumps ahead 20 years to see how many of their dreams came true.

The old stuff:
3)  The Diamond hand  (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Diamond_Arm/60024887?trkid=540) (Brilliantovaya ruka), 1968.
One of the most beloved Russian comedies, this eccentric farce concerns a criminal operation that smuggles gold and diamonds inside a plaster arm cast. Modest economist Semyon Gorbunkov and a swindler named The Count embark on a wild series of smuggling adventures peppered with comic dialogue that spawned several popular catchphrases.

In case this is of interest I will post a link.   You should be able to download movies and programs in Russian.   Some are free and some are $ 1.99.  I have not tried it myself yet and just found this site.

Excellent movie!

For those that like "guy" movies "Brat (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Brother/60025136?trkid=189530&strkid=573186602_3_0)" & "BRAT 2" are cool action adventure flicks where the dialog is half in English and half in Russian so even those with very limited language skills can follow the story.

Another one that you can rent or even catch on TV now and then is "Everything is Illuminated (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Everything_Is_Illuminated/70023964?trkid=73)" again half in English and half in Russian and subtitled. The first half of the story is incredibly funny and the second half is incredibly sad. (About an American born teenager who heads to Ukraine to learn about his ancestry.

Widely recognized as a masterpiece, Andrei Tarkovsky's 205-minute medieval epic, based on the life of the Russian monk and icon painter, was not seen as the director intended it until its re-release over twenty years after its completion. The film was not screened publicly in its own country (and then only in an abridged form) until 1972, three years after winning the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Calling the film frightening, obscure, and unhistorical, Soviet authorities edited the picture on several occasions, removing as much as an entire hour from the original. Presented as a tableaux of seven sections in black and white, with a final montage of Rublev's painted icons in color, the film takes an unflinching gaze at medieval Russia during the first quarter of the 15th century, a period of Mongol-Tartar invasion and growing Christian influence. Commissioned to paint the interior of the Vladimir cathedral, Andrei Rublev (Anatoli Solonitsyn) leaves the Andronnikov monastery with an entourage of monks and assistants, witnessing in his travels the degradations befalling his fellow Russians, including pillage, oppression from tyrants and Mongols, torture, rape, and plague. Faced with the brutalities of the world outside the religious enclave, Rublev's faith is shaken, prompting him to question the uses or even possibility of art in a degraded world. After Mongols sack the city of Vladimir, burning the very cathedral that he has been commissioned to paint, Rublev takes a vow of silence and withdraws completely, removing himself to the hermetic confines of the monastery. Rising quickly out of this mire, the film's final section (a short story in its own right) concerns a boy named Boriska (Nikolai Burlyayev) who convinces a group of travelling bell-makers that his father passed on to him the secret of bell-making. The men take Boriska along, mostly because they pity and are amused by him, but they are quickly enthralled by the boy's ambition, determination, and confidence that he alone knows how to build the perfect bell. Boriska is soon commanding an army of assistants and peasant workers, and, indeed, his fierce temperament and refusal to accept anything but the best possible work and materials from the men fools the viewer — possibly Boriska himself is fooled — into thinking that he does in fact possess the secret, and that on the appointed day when the silver bell is lifted from the ground and its mallet set in place, it will ring. Amid this maelstrom of activity and confusion, Rublev appears; at first standoffish and mistrustful of the boy, he finds himself drawn to Boriska's courage and unselfconscious desire to create. Moved to put aside his vow of silence, Rublev serves finally as the boy's confessor, and he finds that, through Boriska, his faith, and art, have been renewed.

Post by: Chris on December 10, 2007, 04:05:22 AM

Has anyone heard of a film called "Moscow does not believe in Tears" (translation may be slightly different) when I was in Kiev, Ukraine in October it was on TV, I didn't watch it but my lady says it is a good film.

I am going back in 2 weeks and she asked if I could find it, or download it to take with me. I am taking a few other romantic type films with me, mostly British/American, but I couldn't find that one anywhere online.

Thanks
Chris

Hi ChrisMC,

try this link:

www.kinoshow.ru/films/380.html

The film indeed is considered being a classic. Tells a story of village girl, coming to Moscow and having a baby from some stud.

Then she makes it alone to a managing director of some factory; and, when her daughter turns about 17, and the mother fells in love with some "simple but good" guy, the runaway father appears (obviously attracted by his ex-girlfriend wealth).

Sorry to hear that the links do not work... I very rarely download music or video, so am very far from being a specialist in that particular domain.

You can purchase 2 different DVD-releases from Ozon.ru:

http://www.ozon.ru/context/detail/id/956734/  (564 roubles)

and

They ship in Europe, too  :innocent:

Title: Russian versions of movies and how they translate...
Post by: froid on December 30, 2008, 10:37:42 AM
We watched a few movies Sunday night.  Mila wanted me to watch Hot Chick and Madagascar because she had seen them and I hadn't.  She thought it was funny that she was showing ME American films.

During the evening I got to wondering, since every Russian movie I have seen is dubbed into Russian, how could they actually translate some of the cultural references that were western.

For instance...in Madagascar when the lemurs find out the new big animals are from New York...the king introduces them as "The New York Giants".  For anyone from North America would be funny as the name of a football team as well.  I asked Mila how they translated that into Russian...and they called them "The New York Band".  She said it was some movie about a band from New York or something.

I wonder what else gets lost in translation along the way.

Good topic Froid.  Over the weekend I was working on a radio program for the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus who completed a fall tour of the USA recently.  One of the ladies (a cello player) commented on how different she found the West from her impression in movies.  And she was from Lvov which is more 'western' than most regions.

Most movies I watch in Russia are as you say overdubbed.  As many are pirated copies, I find humour not so much in the story line but in the typical 3-4 Russian voices trying to cover all the cast and parts of a Hollyweird movie.

There's nothing like a fast paced scene with multiple actors and suddenly Tom Cruise has a female voice!

It seems to me that you are absolutely correct in that much of what we understand, or vice versa, gets lost along the way.

My favourite channel to watch while in Penza was the NHL channel.  Watching hockey games they could not keep up with the announcers and I could hear most of the english.

The funniest thing I heard was watching the Simpsons...I was just amused by the strange Russian voices overdubbed and watched a little.  I fell on the floor laughing when I heard Homer say "doh" in the background and then the Russian Homer repeat "DOH!" right after.  Haha.

Lots of titles are available, for example just type in "Russian movies with English subtitles" and see how many populate.

Stubben,

There is one "top of mind" movie which will go far to help you understand some things regarding Russian culture and worldview, especially as it relates to traditions around the New Year.

It is "The Irony of Fate" and is a movie which Russians and Ukrainians watch every new years eve. Its a national tradition. The first 2:47 is taken up in what appears to be a short cartoon. That is supplying background so that the view understands that during that period massive housing apartment housing were the same from city to city and a complex in St Petersburg could look the same as a complex in Moscow, down to even similar street names and building facades.

http://russianreport.wordpress.com/russian-movies-%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%BE%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BC%D1%8B/the-irony-of-fate/

A few years back a sequel was released (it's okay but not great like the first) so make sure that you are watching the original first.

Thanks!

I watched the first part but upon starting the next I got pretty confused, not sure if they are in the corrected order? The labeling isn't clear, is it 11 episodes - each split into two parts? I looked for a "Part 2 of 2 (1/11)" but couldn't find it.  ???

Understandable. The original YouTube poster broke the movie into 2 halves, labeling the two halves as Part 1 and Part 2.

Internet TV on your normal Television

As some of you know before my wife and daughter arrived back at the beginning of 2007 I experimented a lot with trying to get all the Ukrainian and Russian TV channels here in Australia.
As Australia is on the other side of the world we cannot pick up the satellites over Europe so the only way to get all the TV channels from Russia and Ukraine is through the Internet.
I wanted to be able to watch all the channels on my normal TV not just on the computer.
The first thing I had to do was buy A Television that had a (DB9) RGB port which for those that don’t know is the port for installing a computer monitor the same as your normal computer screen on your home or office computer.
The 2nd thing I had to get was a stand-alone computer powerful enough to be able to stream live video through. I also had to buy a cordless keyboard and mouse.
The 3rd thing to do was to set up a network switch to run the ADSL2 (broadband) and computers through so that you could not only watch TV when you wanted but also be able to use the computer and internet in my home office.
It took me awhile to set it all up and get it all right but it was well worth the effort.
The advantages of doing it this way allow us to not only watch our normal TV stations & cable TV but also all the channels from Ukraine and Russia in real time as if we had Russian & Ukrainian satellite TV.
By having A PC installed together with the Television it then allows you to surf the internet from your TV (really good if you have a party as you can switch on You Tube for all your music) It opens up a new world as you also have no restrictions on what Region DVD’s you play as your using a PC to play them, you virtually have everything on your normal Television as if you were sitting at your normal computer.
We also installed Skpe, Web cam and cordless headset/mic so we can talk to our overseas friends on video from the luxury of our living room as well as having the ability to walk around the house while talking.
It’s also great for our daughter as she can play Internet & Computer games from the normal TV as well.
Throw in a home theatre system, hard drive DVD player, VHS player, normal Aus cable TV and you have a very powerful media centre that you can do everything on all from the luxury of your living room.

Do you know what is common in Russia with regards to movies at the Cinema, do they show western movies? If they do, are they usually dubbed or subtitled?
Title: Re: Favorite Russian Movies
Post by: mendeleyev on September 17, 2009, 02:39:35 PM
Stubben, lots of Western movies. From the kino (cinema theatre) to rental kiosks. Some are subtitled and many are over dubbed.

Sometimes the overdubbing can be a source of entertainment itself. To avoid license fees, some overdubs leave the English at low volume and try to overdub Russian at a louder volume.

Most comical are the films where you have a cast of 3-4 Russian voices trying to play all the spoken parts in a fast paced movie. I've heard Sylvester Stalone for example, in a female voice because the other 2 Russian voices were busy speaking the other parts.  :chuckle:

With more recent treaties and international enforcement that is gradually coming to a "fade" thankfully, but you can find such a film at almost any sidewalk kiosk.

Thanks ECR i will have to give open subtitles a try as well.

You can search through the open subtitles database and download english or other language subtitles for whatever movie you're watching. My advice would be to download the K Lite mega codec pack and use media player classic to watch the movies on your PC. This way you can just drop and drag the Subtitle (usually a .srt file) and the video file into the media player. Once that happens media player classic will do all the work and then you can watch the Russian movies with english subtitles on them.

I'm not sure how you would add the subtitles to movies using Windows media Player or Quicktime.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all!

The problem with grabbing subtitles separate from the movie is that they don't always sync up, and sometimes there is a difference in movie length / cuts making it not so trivial to adjust for someone who does not know Russian.

If I find any that sync up with the movies already posted I will post the direct links.

All those are great movies. My ex Russian girlfriend made me watch Brat and also Brigada TV series when I was considering moving to Russia!! Actually where I live now on the Mexican border is like a Brat movie every day. I think the cleverest Russian movie is "The Irony of Fate" because it was so clever that although it really attacked the core idea of Communism . . .  uniformity/equality . . .  it was not censored. For those who like historical films, Pushkin's  silent, black and white "The Queen of Spades" is engaging.

Last night we watched Defiance, an 2008 war film written, produced, and directed by Edward Zwick, set during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany. The film is an account of the Bielski partisans, a group led by three Jewish brothers who saved and recruited Jews in border regions of Belarus and Poland during the Second World War.

The film stars Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski, Jamie Bell as Asael Bielski, and George MacKay as Aron Bielski. Filmed in 2007-08, the movie is an adaptation of Nechama Tec's book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans.

We enjoyed it thoroughly, including viewing the interviews with the directors and actors on the DVD!

Title: Soviet film classics are coming to YouTube
Post by: Larry on May 06, 2011, 11:23:32 AM
We will soon be able to watch some Soviet-era film classics free of charge on YouTube:

Quote
MOSCOW (AFP) – The Moscow film company behind some of the greatest classics of Soviet cinema on Wednesday said it had agreed to make dozens of its best-known movies freely available on YouTube.

The agreement between Mosfilm and YouTube means that an initial batch of 50 films that still have legendary status in Russia but are little known outside will for the first time find a wide foreign audience.

The unabridged films have been posted with subtitles and Mosfilm said it will add five more films every week, meaning that by the end of the year a library of 200 films will be available in high definition.

The movies posted so far include "Ivan Vasilevich Changes Occupation", a 1973 comedy where a Soviet engineer accidentally sends feared Tsar Ivan the Terrible to modern Moscow with his homemade time machine.

Also available is "White Sun of the Desert" (1969), the first of a genre of Soviet co-called Easterns set in Central Asia that is still traditionally watched by cosmonauts before every space launch.

Curious viewers may also want to try the 1930s musical comedy set on a river cruise ship, "Volga Volga", which is said to have been the favourite film of Soviet tyrant Joseph Stalin.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110427/ennew_afp/entertainmentrussiafilminternet_20110427160808

I'm glad they will have subtitles.  It's a lot more fun to watch a film when you can understand more than one word in twenty.

A movie I really enjoyed was "Stilegi" a musical about 1950's Russia where a group of teens dress exotically when everyone was expected to conform. It is not too difficult to follow even if you don't know Russian. I usually don't like musicals but this one was a good comedy/drama.

Title: Soviet life in media
Post by: mendeleyev on December 31, 2011, 09:48:59 PM
Lately it seems that we've been watching films dealing with the early Soviet era and I'm keen to trace the evolution in attitudes regarding role of the Soviet system in Russian life. It's not a surprise that prior to the late 80s that the Soviet view would be seen as the moral and just option while those who championed a defense of the old Russian system were assigned such titles thugs and enemies of the state.

There have been some excellent offerings out of Russia which help us gain a behind the scenes look at life in the time of the Whites and the Reds, and then moving beyond there and into the 1920s-1940s period of Soviet life. The phrases "the state" and "enemy of the state" are picked up in the movie listed here and when you think about it, in reality it was the Communists who were the revolutionaries against the state and not the other way around.

It seems to me that movies past the late 80s tend to take just the opposite view. That is natural because the people had thrown aside the shameless and useless Soviet system and there was a vacuum in culture, society, and the human heart. That vacuum was easiest filled in the dream of a Russia returned to her "rightful" place on the world stage and as a regional and world power. (If you have to wonder about the "why" of Vladimir Putin, there's your sign.)

Newer films "did a 180" as we say. It was as if movie directors and screenwriters did an about face (much like their leaders who were Communists one day and freedom loving democrats the next) and it wasn't long before the Reds were the villains and anything anti Soviet deemed an expression of freedom.

The media treatment of the Whites in most cases has not changed and perhaps never will. Today's generations of writers and producers learned only one side of that story and those who fought against Communist oppression in the era of 1918-1930s will for the most part will never be rehabilitated.

Some themes in these movies legitimately challenge some Western ways of thinking while other themes are generally falsehoods. An example: in the movie The Sixth the chief of the police reminds his subordinated that you simply don't line "enemies of the state" against a wall without a trial first. His reasoning was that "we're the state, not a gang." Well, the Soviets had not at that time (1918-1920) fully carried out their revolution nor had the civil war been won. They were the "thugs" and "gangs" making a revolution against the state, not vice versa. But it was effective propaganda.

Films produced past the late 1980 begin to show us different perspectives on life during the revolution. Writers and directors could show other versions of the story without fear of being sent of to a Gulag or thrown in a local prison. At the same time Books and other media forms began to tell Russians the story of what I sometimes call the "lost Russian history."

A very fine contribution in my estimation is "Admiral" filmed in 2008. It is the story of White commander Alexander Kolchak as he transitioned from a hero in the Imperial Navy to outcast and enemy of the state during the revolution.

This is a promo trailer but perhaps you can find it on YouTube; search for Admiral / Адмиралъ by poster IgorAdmiral for the version with English subtitles.

Yet another is "The Agony" from 1974 telling the story of the revolution. Find it at YouTube although the treatment of the subject ranges from professional to agonizingly amateurish during the film.

Your comments, observations and movie postings on this general topic are welcome.

Looks a good move, based on real events also portrayed in the laughable but classic 'Escape to Victory', except the reality is it was a Kiev team the played the German Wehrmacht and won, and lost as well by being shot after the game. Still, Swings i Roundabwts as they says in Wales...

I should add the newly PC Ukes have banned the movie during Euro 2012 so as not to upset the Germans.......

One of the last films made in the Soviet period Come and See from 1985. Filmed in Belarus spoken in Belarusian, Russian and German, it depicts the horrors of the 2nd World War. The little bits that I have seen are realistic and disturbing.

The film was restored in 2017 and re-released in 2020.

I enjoyed this one. If you like slightly unrealistic action movies, this is for you.

T-34

I was just going to post this, and see that it's already here. Looks really cool! One Russian tank versus a group of German Panzers. The Russian tank commander is very young and very cocky.

Yup, still one of my favourites. Also Boomer from about the same time.

There's been some other pretty decent movies over the years. In particular, one that was a kind of special effects fantasy, end of the world deal with all sorts of monsters, flames and transforming buildings. I can't recall the title, but I'd love to track it down. It must be ten or more years old by now.
Is there a movie version of Shazam to identify unknown movies?

Ah, buying movies, music and software in the subways of Saint Petersburg - and then came the Internet!
