100 Years since the founding of Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia no longer exists.
But her name and her story have not been forgotten.
The first state of Yugoslavia was established on 1 December 1918.

After the end of World War I and the collapse of Austria-Hungary, a new order was created. As early as the 19th century, mainly Croatian intellectuals spread the word that the Yugoslavs, the southern Slavs, came from the Illyrians and should be united in one state. In 1917, Serbs, Croats and Slovenes met in the Greek island of Corfu and decided to establish a single state.

The Corfu Declaration had a major drawback, which turned out to be a fundamental mistake because the disputes between Serbs, Croats and Slovenes already existed. However, the new state was not dissolved internally but externally. It was destroyed in 1941 when the Germans and Italians invaded Yugoslavia.

The Axis Powers occupied Yugoslavia and split it up. The Independent State of Croatia was established as a Nazi satellite state and ruled by their fascist militia. German troops occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as part of Serbia and Slovenia, while other parts of the country were occupied by Bulgaria, Hungary, and Italy. From 1941 to 1945, the Croatian fascist regime murdered around 500,000 people, 250,000 were expelled, and another 200,000 were forced to convert to Catholicism.

Marshal Josip Broz Tito was in control of the resistance and was determined to lead an independent communist state, starting as a prime minister. He had the support of Moscow and London and led by far the strongest partisan force with 800,000 men.

Tito created the second Yugoslav state in 1943. But the second Yugoslav state also had similar problems to those of the first one and they were increased after the death of its founder Josip Broz Tito in 1980.
