Title: Russians Getting a UK Visa - Document Translation Question
Post by: Manny on October 01, 2019, 02:38:46 PM
I'm sure someone here will know this.

We are having the folks over from Russia. They are shortly off to this TLSContact place in Moscow who does the application and biometrics, etc. We paid the twenty odd quid fee each 'document assistance' so they scan the passports etc. of the folks.

However, wifey thinks that any Russian documents at all must be translated and certified by someone. I suggested probably not usual stuff as the site doesn't specifically say.

The documents checklist seems a little ambiguous on the subject. All documents must be original and in English, what like Russian passports? That is contradictory.  :'(

When it says "all documents must be in English" are we talking flat ownership stuff, passports, etc., must be translated and certified?

The reference to 'translated documents' doesn't say what must be translated or especially IF. That may refer to obscure supporting paperwork which in this case there isnt any.

Nowhere I can find on the site is there anything that clarifies this. Wifey is planning to call them but anticipates an hour on the phone on hold and the usual sterling Russian customer service.

The agency is scanning passports so we assume they are OK without translation. Surely they can read numbers on a bank statement? Other than internal passports, international passports, old passports with expired UK visas in, proof of funds, the only other document they appear to need which *may* need translation is proof of residence/property ownership.

There is no point forking out for unnecessary translations if they can get by without (it's a pretty routine application generally of folks who have been before). But we dont want them having travelled to Moscow to discover at the last minute they need certified translations of something.

Can anyone clarify who has done this in recent times?

Get them translated and apostilised / notary

Get them translated and apostilised / notary

That is too general a statement and two different processes - seems like overkill. Do you have any recent and specific experience of this?

I think this might help: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certified_translation

As we don't use notaries and apostilles much in the UK a certified translation fills the bill. So it's down to the choice of translator. IIRC from the dim and distant past, a few certified translation, in the UK at least, meant a stamp and translator's signature on each page.

A recent application required ALL documents supplied being translated into English inc passport.
Certified translation was sufficient, no need for Notary/Apostle.
HTH..

Of course, I have experience of this..3 cases.

We had the translations done by an English Lang. school in Sochi and then apostilled ...'overkill'..? Perhaps...but the visas were all granted.

I had a notary certify a Russian Birth Certificate for UK residency, in the UK...but this was 11 years ago. The UK insist on such docs being sent to Milton Keynes to be legally certified, now.

Thanks for the replies.

I know about the certified translation stuff because Wifey has a stamp to do it for when she did stuff people submitted to the Russian embassy here. Probably better she doesn’t translate them though....

I appear to have had the definitive answer from somebody here who knows about this stuff by PM.

Quote
Any document submitted, the original of which is in Russian, should be translated into English. No need for notarisation unless they are official docs like birth certs.

Passports don’t need to be as they have both English and Russian on the bio page.

Any and all other supporting docs should be translated.

So in this case it looks like maybe proof of funds and property ownership documents should be translated and given the ubiquitous rubber stamp by somebody.

Why don't you just make a 10 year visa for them? lots easier can visit more often.. less hassle..If you had a few visa's before and have family in the UK a 10 year visa is a simple process..

They haven't been here in 13 years, I'm not sure how often they'd use it.

They got their visa anyway and are visiting soon. Might squeeze another one in as they have the usual six months multi entry.

Lots of people have 10 year visa's to visit the UK! We only spoke to one women a  few months back who's daughter lives in London .. It does not mean you can stay in the UK for long periods or you will get questioned and asked why, but it is perfectly ok to visit family for a two or three weeks  several times a year..

They probably would not give anyone you know a visa for 10 years as clearly your circumstances do not cover yourself for a private invite to Russia from a Russian , let alone you making a Russian a 10 year visa..

As I said all depends on circumstances..

If you need to visit the UK regularly
If you need to visit the UK regularly over a longer period, you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa that lasts 2, 5 or 10 years. You can stay for a maximum of 6 months on each visit.

If you’re under 18 years old when you apply, your long-term Standard Visitor visa will only be valid for up to 6 months after you turn 18.

Fees
A Standard Visitor visa costs £95.

The fee for a long-term Standard Visitor visa depends on its length:

2 years - £361
5 years - £655
10 years - £822

I have spent over £7k on RU visas - invitations, etc - since 2004

They saw you coning then!! I thought you was a smart person? Smart enough to decide for others if they should remain in the EU but not smart enough to make a proper visa

You are confused, this topic is about Russians getting UK visas, not people getting Russian visas. Please remain on topic.
