Balakovo - Балако́во
« on: March 12, 2009, 02:30:32 PM »
Balakovo (Балако́во)

Balakovo is a town in Saratov Oblast, Russia. Founded in 1762, town status since 1913. Population: 200,470 (2002 Census). Balakovo is the location of the Saratov Hydroelectric Station on the Volga River and the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant. It is served by Balakovo Airport which currently does not work.

A city with it's own beer!

The Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant is situated by the river Volga, 900 kilometers south of Moscow. There are four 3rd generation pressurized water reactors of the VVER-1000 type at the plant. The first reactor was put in operation in 1986, and the last in 1993.

Balakovo was planned to be the biggest nuclear power plant in the world with a total of 24 reactors. But, today only four reactors are in operation. Even though the VVER-1000 reactors are the latest Russian pressurised-water reactors in operation, they still don't meet western safety standards.
