Komsomolsk (Комсомольськ)

Komsomolsk (Ukrainian: Комсомольськ) is a city in Poltava Oblast, Ukraine. Population is 51,740 (2001). A picturesque small city on the left bank of the Dnieper river.and is not to be confused with the Russian town of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

Komsomolsk is one of the youngest cities in Ukraine. It is a town of action with many programs on the go, giving the city a spirit of accomplishment and achievement. The town’s people are very proud of their young city as they work hard to continue its development.

Komsomolsk in Ukraine lies on the banks of the Dnipro River, about 110 km from Poltava. The young city had its beginning in 1960 and even though the city is new, the land is very rich in history dating back to 4000 to 3000 B.C. Also, trade routes passed through here starting at the time of the Bronze Age.

In the mid 1950s through to 1961, development started and so began construction of the quarry mining industry in Komsomolsk. In January 1961 the first new residents to Komsomolsk arrived by train from Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk. Soon more came from Kiev and Lvov, thus grew the town of Komsomolsk.

The city of Komsomolsk was founded on November 29, 1960 as a satellite city of the Poltava Ore Mining and Processing Enterprise. Komsomolsk, with a population of over 54 thousand people, is a rayon center and is situated in the southern part of Poltava oblast on the left bank of the Dnieper River. The official unemployment rate stands at 0.67%.

In 1998 the charter of the territorial community of the city of Komsomolsk was registered, setting a precedent in Ukraine. Local self-government was initially developed through public hearings, which began in September 1997, to determine the issues most vital to the local community. In 2000, a strategic plan of local community development was designed for the city and a number of the projects developed under this plan are already in progress. The procedures of local self-government are constantly being improved to perfect service delivery in the city and a quality management system is being developed by the local government on the basis of ISO 9001–2000 international standards.

A municipal family medicine program has been functioning in Komsomolsk since 1998. The central municipal hospital was re-organized, allowing the municipal dental polyclinic and ambulance station to become independent legal structures. To ensure that patients receive all necessary medicines during their stay in the hospital, a charitable organization, called the “Municipal Hospital Fund”, was established.
