RUA 50,000 post charity donation
Donhollio:
Note from Manny - I split this off from the 50k book prize to keep the two topics apart

Sounds good I'll charge a paltry sum of 400% above of the average Canadian wage. :chuckle:
All joking aside while in Odessa I had the chance of running into a small orphan boy and his friend. One day Robert ( from my TR) bought him some food at McD's. I would see him from time to time, always dirty and sharing his little yogurt container with his friend.
I hadn't seen in in months until my return to Odessa when I was walking out of a club, and there he was trying to sell some kind of a newspaper. He had a broken hand, and he noticed me first, and had a big smile on his face ! It was sad to think how these kids must live.
I have also met people in Zaporozhye from my province who were there taking Canadian supplies to the orphanages .
Once they turn 18 the orphanage no longer keeps them ,and they usually wind up on drugs and before the courts.
Also summer is approaching and every year Winnipeg is one of many cities to host the victims of Chernobyl.
The fire may be out, but the fallout continues to affect the children still living in the zone.
So since we have it easy compared to these kids, why don't we just make a cheque out for $20 each and send it to help these kids have a summer holiday in a foreign country. Or we could collect the cheques, and send it on behalf of RUA ?

Gee, I hate to try to direct this thread back onto track, but FWIW...
The book idea as a prize is great.
The charity idea is also great.
So here's what I'd suggest: Do the books as proposed, Manny. And then do a $100 gift from RUA to the Ukrainian orphanage. At the same time, allow all the members to make contributions to the orphanage fund. Give everyone 30 days to mail a check or send something by PayPal to a common source and then package it all together for once really nice contribution.
In theory, if we are in this quest, we all should be able to contribute something and it would be a fitting tribute to our 50,000th post!
By the way, this forum is really doing great and is a pleasure to read. The mods and admins are doing a great job of keeping things relevant and keeping the fighting to a workable minimum. Keep it up!

That sounds fine to me. If we can decide exactly which US based orphanage/group fund raiser should get the donation, and we can nominate someone in the US we all trust to receive the money and forward it, we will happily chip $100 in. ;D

I agree. It gives us, as a group, an opportunity to do some good somewhere in Russia or Ukraine.
So in addition to the 50,000th poster getting a book of their choice from the above, we need a worthy cause, a money collector (Mendeleyev or TomT maybe?), and some cash pledges from the membership to the charity we choose.
So we will start it rolling with $100 as suggested. :party0011:

if I win, I'll donate my prize to poor RW who are still in the box as most of you prefer to think ::)

Irrespective of if you win or not, will you be donating anything to the Russian/Ukrainian orphanage fund? Now you are married and living out of the FSU, a few :money: should be no problem to you to help the less privileged in the FSU? ;D
