YouTube wasn't banned, just slowed down. People can still access it using a VPN. Consequently, the authorities are encouraging the use of Russian platforms like Rutube. Regarding accurate information on world events, those who seek it will always find a way to access it.

If Smiley girl can't open it then most Russians can't open it. During Soviet
times people could listen to foreign news broadcasts. It was really difficult
as well. the Soviets encouraged listening to State news broadcasts instead.

and loss of control by citizens.

Recently, YouTube has removed numerous channels that support a pro-Russian view. While the deletion of Dmitry Puchkov's channel is understandable, the reasons for the removal of Yegor Yakovlev's Digital History channel are unclear. Meanwhile, channels like those of nazist Borislav Bereza, Dud, and other *snip*s continue to broadcast without issue. The authorities should have offered an alternative platform to compete with YouTube. But... it's Russia  . Btw, my cousin's husband often watches Youtube videos, he says it is slow loading and issues connecting through Wi-Fi.

Regarding travel, I'm not aware of any restrictions on Russians departing their country except сivil servants and sanctioned persons. Last year, my daughter managed to visit 13 countries as Izrael, France, Italy, Spain, GB, Montenegro, Panama, Mexico, Honduras... all with a Russian passport. Proudly, after nearly two years of waiting, she has finally received a B1/B2 visa from the U.S. Consulate in London, valid for one year  . It's all you should know about travel restrictions.
About the demographic situation... Many countries have the same problem. In the Baltic States and Ukraine it is more disheartening.

What freedom are you so worried about? Yesterday, I encountered a woman advocating that men should receive half the current pay, be fined for glancing at a woman, and suggested that castration be a general practice. She should be in the mental health clinic. However, she is actively sharing her opinions on social networks instead. It seems clear that the intent to isolate a segment of the population from external influences stems from the understanding that many individuals do not engage in critical thinking. They will believe everything they are told, whether it involves aliens, dragons, or any other fantastical concepts.

I don't see it as being about freedom in Russia, per se. Freedom in the world, yes, I see regression there. Why so many Russian websites are blocked in the West.

I've no problem with Facebook being banned, it's a seething mass of low-information bleating sheep, propaganda and misinformation anyway. They have VK so don't need it.

They are being forced to decouple from the West, so as with sanctions, they build their own stuff so they can't be held to ransom with it. YouTube has a alternative in RuTube and people will adapt. As with China, the Firewall might be inconvenient to us as visitors, but nobody is sobbing in China because they can't access Facebook easily. They prefer Weixin.

I'll tell you what though, I use a VPN when in China to avoid the Firewall, and I struggled to get it to work last year. In Russia, my daughter couldn't log in the VPN, and Nord told me basically that Russia had blocked them and all their servers from working there. The workaround method to use it was way too complicated for a teenage girl to get to grips with. But TikTok is working there, and unusually, YouTube is for her, and the lack of Instagram has just made her use WeChat instead. She's survived the month.

Since 20% of the population managed to vote in what are essentially Communists (the Labour party), this is, sadly true.

They are restricting free speech, and often getting US companies like FB to enforce it for them. They are also making up random rules on the fly. Two of this week's examples of things they imagined needed to be done was seeking to ban people smoking in pub gardens outdoors, and banning certain types of vapes. These things, they imagine, are of critical national importance. What isn't important to them is 1000 immigrants a day flooding in and Muslims are still raping kids and stabbing people left right and centre. But then again, Muslims vote for them.

I doubt YouTube being taken down in Russia by authorities there is a
key indicator on how much of an idiot I am.

I am pointing out a little news that has been relayed to me by an eye
witness living in Russia that is difficult to deny by the Kremlin apologists
here, who will say it's only lies by the Russian hating media.
