Sweden and Finland agree to apply for NATO membership

More news to p*ss off Putin. It looks like Finland and Sweden are going to apply to join NATO at the same time. This could happen as early as mid-May.

I'm sure Putin is going to be reminding Finland and Sweden and the world that Russia has nukes and might use them.

If one reads the linked article one will see that no such agreement has been reached. However, it is clear that both governments are minded to do so.

All self-inflicted.  Putin has succeeded in strengthening NATO's unity and resolve and has convinced two non-aligned nations to seek membership.  Oops.

Turkey will not ratify membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the applicants if they don’t fufill their promises to combat terrorism and extradite suspects under a memorandum of understanding reached at an alliance summit in Madrid last week, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Monday.

Given that both Finland and Sweden have made great play of backsliding on the agreements with Turkey, I expect that Turkey will throw their toys out of the pram. This, for Turkey, is important stuff and the two Nordic countries have behaved rather treacherously.
