Happy New Year!
« on: December 31, 2021, 04:07:35 PM »
Happy New Year to all my RUA friends! Something tells me this is going to be a splendid year. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2022!

Fired my little brass cannon in honor of you all. Had counted on a fuse burn rate of 2.75 seconds per inch and it was a bit faster than that, but you get the message.  tiphat

Next time chock the wheels!

The cannon looks like what we had at the Yacht Club, one time we stuffed it full of feathers when the manager was distracted. What fun (and mess).

A joyous 2022 to all.

Yes, a charge-and-a-half will exhibit an exemplary demonstration of Newton's third law of motion.

Staked shock cords can be used if recoil-roll must be limited but when room allows, I just let 'er ride (less stress on the carriage).

Haha, good one with the feathers... there are endless pranks you can play with a small cannon!

What a surprise!!!
I met a New Year in the Strip. Eight casinos had firework for eight minutes.
The street was blocked for cars. There were people from all over the world.
The celebration was magnificent, but it was nothing compared to this one private brass cannon shot in the back yard.
I was apprehensive of the 2022. I need to work a lot!!!
Now, I believe that it’s going to be a wonderful and splendid year!!
Thank you, My Lord!!!

That was a pretty cool cannon shot. How large is the cannon? Is it big enough to take someone's head off?

A New Year's celebration on the Las Vegas strip sounds like a blast! I'd love to make it out there one day to check the scene. Glad you had a good time Orchid, and also glad that you enjoyed my quick video. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2022!

Thanks Contrarian. This is a 1/3 scale cannon with a 2-inch bore (weighs about 85 lbs). It could definitely hurt you, but not exactly something you'd want to be rolling into battle with, haha. Great for celebrations though. Happy New Year!

This is a guess but your cannon is a muzzle loader as opposed to what the Yacht Club has which is a breach loader.

This what ‘allowed’ us to stuff the barrel with feathers.

Correct, this gun is a muzzle loader. I do have a few breechloading cannons (including a Winchester model '98 signaler which is one of the most prolific regatta starters in the US) but because my collection is concentrated in mortars I am most comfortable with muzzle loading artillery.

No, but this piece was custom-built by a good friend of mine. While I am an amateur artillerist, he is a master by all measures. I am undertaking my own build of a full-scale Napoleon 12-pounder on a garrison carriage (ordered the barrel from a foundry of course), but most of my collection is bought from original builders. I'm very excited to see what Eastern European historical pieces I might add to my 'family' in the coming years!

Ha, I have shot a 12-pounder. Takes a crew of six if you want to do it safely with spectators. Also the bang it makes is quite loud.

That's awesome Mark, I didn't realize you are an artillery enthusiast too! A 12-pounder is a pretty cool gun for sure. I've served on a couple of 12-pounder crews as well, but reenactment isn't my thing so much as live-firing projectiles. I can't do that around home though - my buddy's got a large range out in the boonies where I can shoot at some old cars and trucks he's brought in.

Happy New Year to you and best wishes for a terrific 2022!  tiphat

Yeah in NL it is illegal to use actual ammo (exploding or not) for cannons.

However, we did once load a cow-pat to see if our aiming was off / correct when we were alone. It turned out to be correct but the force of the fired cow-pat still totally destroyed a road-sign.
