What’s Cooking for Christmas?
« on: December 22, 2020, 12:17:49 AM »
As we draw closer to the Big Day, what culinary treats are you preparing to dazzle your SO’s with?
Will it be a turkey and trimmings?
Succulent Goose,
Rib of beef
Baked beans on toast for the skint folk amongst us.
 Something more exotic?

Has Covid put a damper on your plans?

For us, it’s going to be turkey with all the trimmings, pigs in blankets, pork sausage meat stuffing and roast potatoes. I’m still not sure whether I can get sprouts and parsnips but will have to substitute if not.
Dessert will be an English Trifle and Christmas Pud with brandy sauce followed by mince pies and Christmas cake.
For wine the selection is somewhat limited but it will be a choice of Krim champanski, a Jacobs Creek Chardonnay and a Georgian Red ( Saperavi or Mukuzani), an Argentinian Gewürztraminer dessert wine and choice of liqueurs to finish of Chocolate Baileys, Hines VSOP cognac or Blood orange Couintreau.

Sounds real good.

Might do prime rib or a real good stew.

Coconut cream pie for dessert.

And a single malt scotch.

When it comes to Christmas, I like traditional dinner.
Of course that differs from home to home and country to country.
That in itself could make this thread interesting.

So for me, Turkey dinner, with mashed potatoes, gravy
peas, carrots, stuffing, cranberry sauce and fresh homemade rolls,
Apple pie for desert.

My wife haveing to add her touch will do a cesar salad and she will
make Teramisu , which she does incredibley well :)

My parents divorced when I was young, so back in the day,
we had chrismas dinner with Mom, boxing day with day.
Which was left over turkey on homemade bread
with gravy ( hot turkey sandwich ) and french fries.

to this day I like these things and do every year :)

That sounds pretty good Trev.
I like the idea of the leftover turkey and French fries. Might give it a go this year.  tiphat

Sounds awesome!

Not gonna cook a whole turkey but might get a small sliced loaf and some cranberry sauce.

Tiramisu is my favorite dessert!

Enjoy.

We decided not to have a Christmas this year.. can't be assed with it.. no where to go.. nothing to do.. nothing on TV virus every where!
Just going to work.. yep Christmas day and New years day.. next year we will have a double Christmas though to make up for it!

Sent all the family Harrods hampers thought we would treat them, so Christmas done and dusted already!

All the more reason to have a good celebration and knees up, I would have thought, and turn your back on this washed out year.

I enjoy the day itself.
Few gifts in the morning,
big dinner, little nap on sofa
after big dinner.

Not having to see anyone can be a bonus  :chuckle:

As I am alone this Christmas I have decided to cancel the event. It is helped by the fact that here Christmas Eve is the big event. The 25th is a normal day for many people.

So, I am having a Christmas steak, or three. Found a nice piece of butcher's steak and a couple of what look like entrecote steaks labelled as generic forequarter.

I've a bottle of port with my name on it and a box of red wine for when I no longer have a name.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

As per usual the wife and I will be joining the kids and grandbabies for Christmas eve. The grand kids will open a few presents on Christmas eve then visit with their other grandparents on Christmas day to gather the rest of the bounty. On tap for the meal is the smoked cornbeef brisket which I am smoking as I write this. SIL has secured 100 fresh oysters and crab claws from the cold waters of Maine. There is a few bottles of Jordan wine and a 21 year old bottle of Blantons bourbon. We'll grill a few of the oysters but I expect most of them will be eaten raw

We're heading round to my parents this year but my sister and her family unfortunately won't be joining us given the current situation. The wife and I are planning to have a leisurely morning, walk the dog down to my parents (which is a decent yomp) and start helping out around 1pm.

I'm on the fish course, which will be done soon after I've poured Negroni's for me and dad and I'll begin to cook, de-shell and put together a crab, langoustine & lobster starter. Light, zingy and very tasty. The beasts should be delivered fresh tomorrow.

Mum and Mrs Rosco will be cooking the three bird roast with roast potatoes, red cabbage, sprouts/pancetta, carrots & parsnips, bread sauce and the gravy. Washed down with lashings of red beaujolais of course......with a few kilted sausages on the side!

Mums arranged the dessert but dads more excited about some new £200 whiskey he's ready to crack open. We've bought board games and of course it'll be a zoom catch up with the missing family. Looking forward to a nice day without the daily covid/brexit updates to grind you down.

Hope you all have a good one, wherever you are!

Sounds lovely.

I love a shallot vinaigrette or some tobacco & lemon on a raw oyster. I couldn't be arsed shucking 100 of them though..... ;D

Thanks! I expect it will be. The SIL loves the oysters raw as much as I do. They are not usually a big deal to shuck. I'll do a dozen or so, then he'll pick up and do that many or more. Just him and I can knock a 100 out in just a few hours. My son, the wife and daughter don't really care for them but will eat a few, they will make up the difference on the crab claws. My wife and daughter both love the grilled oysters tho which is a PIA to do. While delicious I still see that as a waste of good oysters.

I should mention though, I have never heard of either shallot vinaigrette or some tobacco(sp?) & lemon on oysters. Might be worth trying sometime. I'll eat about half of mine straight and the other half with a dash of tabasco and lemon. The SIL is prone to horseradish and lemon

Sounds like a good day planned.
What birds are going in the roast?
The shellfish starter sounds yummy.
I’m mulling over doing a king prawn and wild sm salmon starter with avocado and asparagus but it’s still being formulated in my head.
The whisky is intriguing. Let us know what it is?

A few tunes on your hifi and the port should get you in the mood.

We decided to have a Duchy beef joint instead of turkey (for those over the pond, Duchy is the organic grocery brand belonging to Prince Charles).

Turkey seems a bit passé. Seems daft to pay through the nose for something you only eat because it's a habit one day a year.

Wifey (thanks to Andrew) has just discovered port. So a twenty-year-old bottle of that has appeared. I'll be on Aussie wine - sod the EU.  tiphat

Quiet day at home for us with my son and our daughter. Open fire going, general relaxation. Nice to have a few days off, Monday being a bank holiday makes it a four day weekend.

Aren’t you paying through the nose for the ‘Duchy’ brand though?
