Curious to read other peoples thinking and knowledge with the coming & already partially deployed 5G network.

What will be the pro's and con's.

As way of background below is a link from Wikipedia regarding the new network.

Not many drawbacks and even with the faux 5g employed by some USAian carriers data transfers will become faster. There's no practical additional benefit for most voice calling scenarios.

Over here 4g started a process that 5g will accelerate: replacement of physical data connections with wireless. Already many people here use 4g connections as their sole means of connection for all devices including pc and laptop. 5g will make that more practical.

Internet of things development will add connected convenience to many aspects of life that the limited bandwidth of 4 and 3g render impractical for mass adoption.

Fortunately we have not seen too much of the ill-informed insanity about health and surveillance that some places have been plagued by.

I don't use 5g. The systems are live but limited, however pervasive WiFi tends to mean that 5g's advantages are somewhat dissipated by the availability of free, fast, internet access in most public and commercial spaces. In my home I have a choice of free WiFi access points if I were to decide to stop paying my internet bill. I could imagine a not too distant future where I gave up my fiber for 5g.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

Pro: More speed, freeing up airspace that is now occupied by the older networks so they can be used to improve performance of other over-the-air applications.

Also, many "5G" providers now, actually use the airspace of 4G with the same frequencies so there is no added benefit (yet).

From a consumer point of view, 5g just adds more speed and more reliability. From a technicians p.o.v. there are numerous improvements that will obsolete or make impossible telephone hacks like number-spoofing, dodgy sim-cards, and stuff like that.

no sure about 5 g, i joke quite often I would be impressed if they could make 3 g work consistently.
More dropped calls than ever, not much seems faster than 4 - 5 years ago.
In  Canada we pay the highest cost for any of these services in the world.

Canada is also one of the least populated countries in the world :) I saw a show yesterday about "dangerous roads" and this episode featured a road from Winnipeg -> Gods Lake (or somesuch). It was basicly undoable in summer as it was one huge swamp. And in winter it wasn't much better, as driving on the lake/ice seemed the only possible road there. And they went as quickly as they can because the town of gods lake needs its supplies.

Beautiful country though, that was a big plus.

Tried to find it in google:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Winnipeg,+Manitoba,+Canada/Gods+Lake+Narrows,+Manitoba,+Canada/@52.2031249,-98.0582747,7z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x52ea73fbf91a2b11:0x2b2a1afac6b9ca64!2m2!1d-97.1383744!2d49.895136!1m5!1m1!1s0x528903612ebc7569:0xf758ee637c2a6ead!2m2!1d-94.494085!2d54.553608!3e0

Seems no such road exists (officially!)

Lets put the size of The Netherlands and Canada in perspective, you can have a late breakfast in the Northern part of Groningen and a really good dinner in the South in Maastricht, on the same day. Going East to West one can have breakfast and than have to wait for something to open for lunch. And you will not exceed any speed limit in The Netherlands.

This is based on the fact that you are not slowed down by a 'file' meaning traffic. So add a couple hours because traffic will find you.

Now about Canada, assuming you stay in Canada; St. John's to Vancouver is some 5 time zones and perhaps 100 hours of solid driving? Perhaps a longer distance but faster dropping down to The States might save some time.

Trev & Markje can correct me if I am wrong.

5G network, Chinese tech AND Brexit chat!

I think we should have at least one conversation about the Chinese
trying to use their low cost tech to snoop into secrets and stuff like
that. I can only imagine 40 new accounts from various IP signing up
in the next 24 hours so they can get in on that conversation.

Is it possible to start a Chinese 5g tech AND Brexit thread?  :chuckle:

I drove up the Alcan Highway up and back twice to work in Alaska back
when I was a college boy. Gorgeous drive. There are little gas/food stations
along the way at various "Mile Markers" that are staffed at least partially by
Canadian college school girls. I was invited by one to "watch the northern lights
from her bed room and I still have fond memories of that time.

It seems the FAA has issued a warning to operators of Boeing 737 regarding interference with there instruments in particular the altimeters from the band width of 5G signals.
