Shakey Update
« on: September 10, 2020, 02:57:46 PM »
Spending the week here in Bonita Springs Florida doing some preliminary unpacking and utility transfer.  Getting ready for the full time move during the first week of February.  Sold my house in Beavercreek in July and rented an apartment for short term until February.

My Infinity FX35 is now 10 years old and has 281,000 miles on it.  Its been the best car I ever owned but is getting to be the time to get a new car.  Looking for something certified pre-owned.  Porsche Macan, Lexus UX or NX, Buick Encore is my starting list.  Any suggestions?

My suggestion is to go with wat you know - that said the Lexus models have great JD Power reliability ratings.

I saw the listing for your old house, what a fabulous property and a great buy for someone! Your new place looks great too. I hope all goes well with your move.

For a good used car I’d certainly be looking at German or Japanese. I’m not sure how Buicks are as they’re only domestic market (there) I think, but assuming still GM, probably OK. Personally I’d go German and consider Mercedes, VW, Audi and BMW too. I’m a Range Rover fan but I don’t know their reputation across the pond. German and Japanese are certainly more reliable.

I have driven many cars in my life (never again french! their electric systems are cheap and poor design), but then my luck ran out and I had to buy something with little money. I bought an "overrated" BMW for the first time in my life. $1000 , with 300.000 miles on it and 15 years old. I immediatly let go of my 'overrated' idea. BMW's are worth every penny you pay for em. I now drive something current but again a BMW  :loving:

How about a Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot?

Those would probably be my first two choices.

A RAV4 would be my third choice.

Good luck!

Where is Beavercreek?

Where is Beavercreek?

Where his old house was in Ohio. On a golf course it was.

Never was much of a fan of the old Highlander as it seemed a bit boxy to me, but I like the new design much better. My brother bought a 2019 and they really have improved the design. As far as reliability, you can't beat it. I imagine they're still using the same chassis as Lexus.

Speaking of Lexus, the RX-350 is worth a look. Acura RDX also for speed and comfort, very roomy for a big guy like Shakey. Of course, Mercedes, BMW, Audi all factor in, just talking about others you might consider.

My suggestion, test drive them all and you'll know which one is for you. That's how I do it. You know, like finding the right girl. :)

Test drive what you like, if you find something and your not 100% sure.
Rent it for a few days, great way to check it out and be sure.

I ended up buying a 2020 Lexus NX300 that was certified pre-owned.

Interesting situation.  A lady bought the car new and sold it back to the dealer 5 days later with a total of 161 miles on the odometer.  They lowered the price $4000 from the mlp and added 24 months of certified pre-owned warranty to the car - making in a 6 years bumper-to-bumper warranty with unlimited mileage.  In addition I got a lifetime drive train warranty.  Thought it was a very unusual offer that didn't come around that often so I bought it on the spot.

4 cyl turbo that gets 28 mpg in the highway.  Fire engine red witha tan and black leather interior.

Red cars tend to get a lot of tickets.

Other than that it sounds like a steal.

Congratulations! Is that a small SUV?

Is that a small SUV?

I had to Google a photo, seems like a small wannabe SUV. Surely very reliable, not terribly exciting, but we all want different things from cars. I like the burble of a big V8 and the tickle in the tummy when you floor it. Why my wife steals my car any chance she can.  :chuckle:

But Shakey bought totally right. I once bought a Mustang from NC that a 'native American' girl had bought new and returned it after a few months for whatever reason. It was totally as new and thousands of dollars cheaper. I drove it for a while here after I imported it. It was one of my better buys.

When I used to go to the USA on vacations I usually did just that. Sadly, of course, the rental models were usually small engine, low spec, versions but still fun. More like driving a European Ford Sierra or similar in reality.

My first visits I used a company called something like Ugly Duckling rentals who specialised in old(er) cars - no Mustangs from them. I liked hiring those land yachts that were such a feature of US roads back in the day. God, they were awful to drive - but fun nonetheless. It was driving those cars that I first found myself 'tacking' round interchanges, forced to adjust steering to keep on the road. Bench seats with chesterfield style buttoning and so little power available. A whole experience.

How does it feel driving with a steering wheel on the opposite side that you're used to?

I was taught there are two sides of the road to drive on, the right side and the wrong side. Which side do you guys drive on?   ;D
Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776. If you want to stop the war in Ukraine, fix elections, stop medical tyranny and forced vaccinations, lower inflation and make America and the world a better place, get Trump back into power. The Democrats and Republicans have shown they can't do the job. They are good at robbing us and getting people killed in non stop wars.

They drive on the wrong side.  :hidechair: I done that!

When I worked for a Dutch gallery, while I was driving in the UK, picking or hanging paintings, I always spoke in English to the owner regarding matters. Eventually he asked why I spoke in English to him in the UK. 'I replied so I stay on the wrong side'.

My nightmare was some one on a bike.

Personally, I’m OK either side of the road or either side of the car. I’ve had lots of left hand drive cars here over the years, and a couple of trucks. I’ve also done lots of driving abroad, especially when we were using our place in Estonia, and in Russia, the US and elsewhere too.

It would be a dealbreaker for most people I guess.

No right side or wrong side, as long as one is on the correct side for driving in the country one finds oneself. Get in the car, acclimate to the controls, go out and drive.

Why should being an attentive driver be difficult?

I had to drive around the UK in a rental (Preston area). It was fun for me, but also it gave me a huge headache at the end of day 1. After that, it was easy as ever (just can't get the hang of roundabouts in GB, they're weird.).

January 2021 Update:

My retirement on February 5th has been anything but uneventful.  I announced my retirement in August and in October my company announced they would be merging with another company.  That transaction closed in late December so now I'm working for a new company for 45 days.  All that paperwork, forms, insurance 401k have really been keeping me busy.

The condition of my hips has really gotten worse over the past 3 months; so bad that I cannot walk without the help of a walker and usually with some degree of moderate to severe pain.  The good news is that I finally found a doctor that will do the surgery for me.  The date for the surgery is February 22 and allowing for 6 weeks rehab I should be in Florida in early April.  I can hardly wait for the pain to end.  My right hip is bone on bone and my left hip is getting worse every day.

My step-daughter had her second baby on Dec 24th - another boy names Ivan.

I'll try to keep you posted.

You can.  Its called a bilateral hip replacement.

I'll find out this week if this is a possibility
