Cycling - Riding a Bike
« on: May 26, 2020, 02:02:21 PM »
You want to get yourself a bike..

Best exercise ever, gets your heart going.. and after you finish you feel like Steve Austin

I average 100 miles a week cycling during the summer...of course its flat here with no hills so just stay in one gear..

Using a bike is very good for a variety of reasons.

Curious why no one has mentioned any horizontal exercises one can do together. One can do it vertically as well with the right flexibility and posture. No matter which way, one strengthens muscles and learns breathing control.

I prefer my feet on the ground and bikes need maintenance, punctures repairing etc.

Besides, I’d rather not rub my a**e raw and end up with haemorrhoids.  :scared0005:

After breaking my neck on a motorcycle when I was 15 and then breaking both my arms and a wrist in my 30s I reached the conclusion that wheeled vehicles with fewer than 4 wheels were not for me. However, I commend anyone else who is willing to use a bike for sport rather than need.

We go cycling. I have a Dutch style bike.

ila_rendered

It has the unusual reverse pedal style back brake Dutch bikes have that I dont like. And only three gears as Holland has few hills. I want to change it to a five or ten speed and a standard back brake. But the style of it I like.

I'd maybe prefer a British vintage one in a similar style. A nice refurbed old Raleigh, perhaps.

Besides, I’d rather not rub my a**e raw and end up with haemorrhoids.  :scared0005:

If you're doing the odd hour or two, that's not a thing.

I have a full motorcycle license. Sold my bike some years ago but not averse to getting another.
Much prefer that variety to pedallling.
Saying that, I cycled a lot as a youngster including to school daily, until I got a moped as a teenager.

I think Steveboy mentioned it as an alternative to walking/running in which case it would be a daily activity.

Aww man, I just scrapped my raleigh 2 months ago. You could've gotten it for free from me :(

It was 30+ years old, but it did have handbrakes and one of those saddles with huge suspension in the back.
Looked like this probably :

(and yes, this bike is for sale now, but its not me selling it)

I ditched it because the repairs on it would equal buying a new bike which i did. I now have a Batavus Zonar.
I can recommend it if you are looking for something new.

That old Raleigh is the type I wanted.

The Batavus looks good though. What kind of money are they?

What other brands do Dutch people regard as good quality and value?

I bought the Batavus for 600 Euro's + 200 Euro's 3-year care package. (If you buy on the internet, you usually pay 800 and no care package)

So far, it had 1 flat tire because I made a misstake and bumped a big stone in the road with soft tires. Because tires are on the slim side it rides like a dream but it makes them vunerable when going out without pumping them to pressure.

Brands Dutch generally consider good quality (listing city/family usage bikes only):
Gazelle
Batavus
Raleigh

I own 3 Batavus bikes now:
- Batavus Zonar (for myself)
- Batavus Snake (my son)
- Batavus Mambo (my wife)

In about 2 years I reckon the youngest is ready for his first bike, which will be .... batavus.

Everyone is cycling in St Petersburg now, bike lanes are appearing just about every where, it is like the new craze I did hear they want to make it kind of like Amsterdam.

The Dutch consulate arrange a bike marathon every year in May which has been getting bigger and bigger every year, unfortunately this year was cancelled due to the bug..but its a great experience ..

You need the three speeds in Holland because the wind is nearly always against you. This style bike is in Holland referred to as an Opa fiets. Opa Manny, does have a nice 'ring' to it.

Marilyn was walking next to her bike. A trucker pulled up next to her and asked her if everything was all right. She replied yes everything is fine, then why are you walking next to your bike? Well she explained if you were between my legs for three hours you need a rest to.

Haven't seen you for a while BelleZeBoob, welcome back!

bicycling can be very pleasurable for sure. I mostly ride when I'm down in Florida but we have some beautiful trails here in NW Pennsylvania too. It's wonderful to take pleasure in those activities which are both enjoyable and healthy.

How do you find cycling in winter?

As for me, I am not even thinking of putting my bike to sleep in winter. Last winter, I went everywhere on a bike. However, I admit that at times it was really hard to balance on the frozen slippery roads with angry drivers beeping at me  (:)

In the fitness club.

angry drivers beeping at me  (:)

They weren't angry. They're trying to get the attention of a beautiful woman.)))
