Wiz's Antiquated Windows XP Set Up
« on: March 26, 2020, 07:05:32 AM »
Wiz, if something does not work for you on the Internet it's a pretty good chance that the cause is not the site or page with which you are trying to interact.

Very often the 'cure' for the issue is to use a modern browser and operating system that are kept updated for functionality and security.

Andrew

I am not a specialist but I do know a bit of computers.....and my computer has 3 different Browsers.....all updated to the latest version......for XP and working absolutely fine.

The problem was BT openreach..... doing testing on my line without warning.....

They changed my broadband from 16Mbs Speed to very fast  59Mbs and I did not noticed that they were doing testing.....on my line.

The good news....  is at the moment everything is working fast, changing pages is instant.....despite that my wife is doing streaming her TV Russian station on her PC (Wifi) and also talking to mama on Skype, at the same time on my Tablet!

Thank s for your help.

Wiz, Windows XP is obsolete. Chrome has not been updated for XP since 2016, Firefox is not updated for XP and IE has not been updated for years.

Yes, there are some minority browsers that still get updates but I bet you're not using Baidu or UC browsers.

That means you are not able to use many sites as they were designed and certainly not as securely as you probably expect.

Windows XP has had no security updates for years. You're pc is a liability not just for you but for other people outside of your home.

You are not so poor that you can't afford a couple of hundred quid to buy a pc that is both functional and safe using a safe operating system.

You certainly cannot moan about how a site works when you are using an obsolete setup. It seems rather odd that your Internet use was hindered by a faster connection, but whatever. Your problem was not with this site but with your setup - yet, as you have done before, your first port of call was to blame the blameless. That's not fair on Manny, or others, who end up wasting time trying to help you.

While whining whinging Wiz is not my favourite poster, and I suspect the feeling is mutual I admire that he can continue to use a miserable, ass end backwards and crash prone browser & soft ware system.    tiphat

Far be it from me to stop our favourite gerro from using the computer and software he was using when his fingers were not stiff from rheumatism.

However, I did criticise him for whining here when his antediluvian system failed to function correctly. His system should be expected to not function correctly and an un-patched, un-updated, system is insecure - that does have risks for other people using their PCs or mobiles.

The Modify Button at the bottom....right does not work correctly since you moved to the new provider.

Only the top Modify is working...

It is abandon clear from his writings, Andrewfi, the old geriatric and Ancient Methuselah,  permanently single and on diet…, delusional Einstein and professor of every subject except personal relationships, that he has not only have lost his glasses but also his marbles too. That it’s not a surprise to anybody, like me, who has been reading his writings for nearly two decades. Looks that his usual target, Moby, is busy and not around for him to express his undying admiration for his photographic achievements, so he choose a new target, my self, to express his deeply felt disdain for my modus operant and use of an ancient computer model and program similar to his old age.

In my previous post, I mentioned the reason for my mistake that I posted, which of course was not my intention to criticise the software used by the board RUA or its owner, in the last paragraph I said: “The good news....  is at the moment everything is working fast, changing pages is instant....” etc .....

But my comments were ignored by him and also by his Jewish follower and Troll.

In his effort to give me a lesson he makes the following unsubstantiated comments:

“Windows XP has had no security updates for years. You're pc is a liability not just for you but for other people outside of your home.”

…. and the old Methusalah and biblical figure, Andrew, continue making a mountain out of a mole and a fool of himself.

“You certainly cannot moan about how a site works when you are using an obsolete setup. It seems rather odd that your Internet use was hindered by a faster connection, but whatever. Your problem was not with this site but with your setup - yet, as you have done before, your first port of call was to blame the blameless. That's not fair on Manny, or others, who end up wasting time trying to help you.”

My reply to your unsubstantiated comments is, take a look at this threat and you will find that other people made more comments than me. When I make a comment is to bring to the attention of Manny any problem I encounter….and not to waste his time.

For your information XP after the end of support in 2014, had an update by Microsoft, (paid by the UK and now is used by an Asian based company to make Money) All security problems, at the time, were updated. My Chrome version is working fine in most of the sites I visit and I have no need to visit any porno sites, but if I want to read a specific site, I can always use my updated Tablet! It is obvious you missed or ignored my comments!

Many times I have seen various problems but I did not report any as I knew Manny is taking care of them.

Sorry been late to reply to your comments....but I have a wife, grandchildren and better things to do with my life, like taking an afternoon sleep and rest instead of arguing with you or others.!

Using old software is a thing now with some of the tech minded guys. I know a bloke who has a box that is running a version of 2000. Just for fun.

Nothing wrong with old software and operating systems. Depends what you use it for.

Use it for random browsing and not for online shopping and financial stuff and it'll be fine.

Speaking of security, the next job here is to do the https thing.

Has it crossed your mind.... that the scammers go for fishing where there is plenty of fish?

After so many years I had no scammer taking me in.... for a ride... as also no virus. Only with w 2000 I had a couple of viruses. With XP none.

I have a simple rule:I always delete all unwanted/unrecognised  emails. and put the sender to my scammers unwanted list. No more emails.....

With banks I am using Card reader........and email with code....and that is that. not a penny lost.

What ever you do in life you have to be alert......only idiots answer those fishing emails and send money! PayPal Payments for safe delivery before they get paid!

Board is bloody fast now.......with my very fast Broadband......59 Mbits only £2 extra from what I was paying before.

TOTAL Bill = £30 a month including Free Local and UK Mobiles any time for 1 hour. Same FREE calls to 50 Countries including Russia.... Wife very happy.

PS: XP was the best and lighter Operating program created by MSoft......easy to navigate and use. You know, I do also webdesign... so easy for me...

But always disconnected from the Internet.....

An XP box out-of-the-box connected to the internet gets hacked and 0wned within 6 minutes after going online 10 years ago, i bet it is even faster now.

@Wiz, you shouldn't make comments to AndrewFi, because he is absolutely right.
XP may work for you, but you are a danger to every computer you connect with.

Also be aware: If you would live in the Netherlands, if your bank account gets hacked and your money is stolen, better not tell the bank you were running XP, or they'd instantly declare your money gone without compensation. I doubt british banks do business differently.

Wiz, it's OK. You're a pensioner and can't afford to live. Give me your email address and I will send you a license key for Windows 10. You can then run secure versions of all your favourite software.

All you will need to do is download Windows; now that your Internet connection speed is at a sensible level it won't inconvenience you.

If I do that for you then you will not have problems with websites not working, your pc will probably work better because it will be free of malware and botnet hijacks. Most importantly, you will cease to be the dirty smelly neighbour whose decrepit property brings down values on the whole street!

Wiz,

You are simply wrong to debate this with the likes of Markje - he HAS a clue ...

He is giving you GOOD advice

You should download Linux Mint 19.3 mate from linux mint.com .. try running it from the flash disk - BEFORE installing it

You can dual boot

Your old box will FLY and you really will be secure .. Web site design is code based .. it doesn't matter what OS you use

A serious hacker can be watching every key-stroke you make and be in your bank account before you ..!

There's a reason why folks were recommended to stop using XP...

Mark, with due respect I have already replied to Andrew as also to Manny in my 2 previous posts.

Regarding Andrew's comments and also yours regarding XP and that it is DANGER FOR ANY COMPUTER I CONNECT, I would appreciate if you explain to me your comments.

I am sure that my British Banks that I visit with my XP.... must of course are aware
and have taken the necessary security measurements. As I said until now I have not lost any money!

Looking forward to your comments.

Regarding Andrew's comments and also yours regarding XP and that it is DANGER FOR ANY COMPUTER I CONNECT, I would appreciate if you explain to me your comments.

Ok, then lets start with webbrowsing.

Windows Security certificates have a certain version numbers. these do not make sense but in order are:

SSLv2 (nowhere supported anymore, hackable <1 minute)
SSLv3 (nowhere supported anymore, hackable <5 minutes)
TLS 1.0 (some sites support it , but not much anymore, mostly 2000-2010 built websites.)
TLS 1.1 (most sites support it)
TLS 1.2 (world standard right now)
TLS 1.3 (newest standard, security aware websites like finance/government etc. already support it).
TLS 1.4 (design phase)

Windows XP has an outdated browser. The last it supports is TLS 1.2. Since microsoft nor any of the major browsers support XP anymore, there won't come an update to support TLS 1.3.

Right now, the world is shutting off more and more websites with TLS 1.0 , its predecessor. It won't be long until TLS 1.1 is also shut off and then TLS 1.2 and you will no longer be able to visit websites that start with HTTPS
abn amro test  -> this site tests webserver compatibility with regards to certificate-security. I use a large dutch bank as example.

See all protocols that fall under Windows-XP. Any website that still supports it is automaticly capped to a "Grade A" , which is not stellar. Dutch banks always have grade "A+" meaning they are -not- supportive of any insecure protocol. As you can see, this bank already stopped supporting TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and the lowest they support is TLS 1.2  , which is Windows XP highest !

And this part is just 'web browsing' , it doesn't talk about other protocols that XP has , like file & print sharing.
Windows 10 by default has that stuff turned off, and if you turn it on it won't turn it on 'for the internet' but just your local home-network.

Right now, criminals can be reading all your files, if your internet provider has a crappy firewall/modem solution.

Also windows-XP has bugs, SMB 1.0 which is already un-supported by windows-10 is able to gain administrator priviledges WITHOUT user interaction. That means your computer is turned on & runs file/print sharing and *poof* bad dude is running programs with administrator priviledges.

Microsoft knows all this, but -wont- fix them anymore as XP is out-of-support end-of-life. Advice: Upgrade to a mainstream windows version.

I am sure that my British Banks that I visit with my XP.... must of course are aware
and have taken the necessary security measurements. As I said until now I have not lost any money!
I am 100% sure that they don't , which is why banks said you should not use XP, which is why Microsoft itself says you should not use XP, which is why every comp-tech professional in the world says you should not use XP.

And if you loose money, you will not be reimbursed by the banks either. Because Windows XP.

Zorba is a Greek pensioner. He can’t afford to upgrade his hardware and run current software.
That’s why he’s got an unsupported  XP system.

If his system has a 64-bit CPU (which is basicly everything from 2008 and newer), it is capable of running a Modern OS like Windows-10.

Linux also supports 32-bit processors, allowing you to run a modern OS on even older hardware.

Mint-19 mentioned upthread is a good light-weight linux for people not interested in 'how stuff works' but just on a user-level.

He’s probably had his pc since the launch of XP. There were a lot of companies flogging hardware cheaply around then with pre installed stuff which could be bought on installment plans.
I bet the Zorba bought one of those and is still running it.

When Wiz gets back, my offer of a current Windows license still stands.

If the guy is using a pc that simply will not work with modern, relatively secure, functional, software then I won't offer more except to note that one can buy, from Amazon and eBay, desktop pcs that will run Windows 10 and most software except for modern, graphics heavy games or image/video editing tools for around £200. Until recently I was running several of these machines in my own business and still use one as my travel/backup pc.

Given that a machine incapable of running Windows 10 will not run the software I excluded above, there's no good reason to stick with a Windows 10 incapable machine.

Here's the exact same model as I bought. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-ThinkCentre-i5-2400-Professional-Computer/dp/B01E97J8OI/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Lenovo+sff+pc&qid=1585334897&sr=8-5
The last of them sits below my TV waiting to be turned into a music and video server. You can buy this machine for £227 including Windows 10 and a trial version of Microsoft Office.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

Wiz, my second business involves building computers. Like others said, you're not getting security updates for Windows XP. You probably have a lot of crap on your computer after opening links from emails phishing for info, watching porn and visiting conspiracy theory websites which is slowing your computer down and recording every keystroke of yours when you log onto your bank's webpage.

Windows 10 Pro ISO can be downloaded on Microsoft for free. Get another computer and install Windows 10 Pro for free. You can buy an activation key on ebay for a few dollars. Remove the hard drive off the old computer and insert it into an external hard drive bay that plugs into your new PC. Download all the important documents, photos and videos onto the hard drive of your new PC. Andrew linked an older model. Some parts can last almost forever but hard drives don't and used PC's usually have around 30,000 hrs of use on the hard drives and that is when companies get rid of their PCs for new models.
Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776. If you want to stop the war in Ukraine, fix elections, stop medical tyranny and forced vaccinations, lower inflation and make America and the world a better place, get Trump back into power. The Democrats and Republicans have shown they can't do the job. They are good at robbing us and getting people killed in non stop wars.

Windows 10 is a pile of ..

I've tried to leave MS behind throughout the DOS days (DR DOS becoming Novell DOS)  and had to keep coming back ... no need to now

Finally, Linux distros remove the need to use windows or MAC OS ...   I've converted one of those big screened MACs, too - it flies when every MC OS turned it increasingly to kludge

Thanks everybody who made the effort and posted his opinion in an effort to help me realise that the computer science has moved on and I was left behind, an old relic of the WWII and still using an out of date Operating System, windows XP.

Special thanks goes to MarkJ, a very old and respected member on this board for his effort and time he spent writing his posts in an effort to educate me by replying to my questions.

Unfortunately nobody has answered and proved Andrews comments and accusations, as I requested! Having never met him, I found his comments as insulting to my intelligence, and I am not Moby to ignore it! He obviously thinks I am a 10 year old child and not an older person.

These were his comments:

Windows XP has had no security updates for years. You're pc is a liability not just for you but for other people outside of your home.[/u]

I don't remember moaning but simply alerted Manny and I corrected my mistake later, you can read it again.

Does everybody think that I am not aware about the termination, by Microsoft, of their support for their operating system XP since 2014?

Any how just for your information 3 years ago I had a problem with one of my 2 drives on my pc….. so I asked a friend to help me. He took my PC home and returned back fully refurbished with increased memory,  larger New hard drive and still running my original XP, updated with the latest security. (paid by NHS). He also connected my External drive where automatically everything is saved to avoid any loss of useful data.

For your information for every program I have installed in my PC, I have the original registered Discs with Microsoft and others, not pirate copies.

I can afford to buy a New PC …. BUT last year, my son who lives in San Francisco and has a Phd in Computer science paid me a visit and he bought me a new pc running windows 10, but I keep it in my shed and still use my XP. I have no need to learn to drive a Formula 1 car or to watch Porno, as you suggest BillyB. You maybe need it to entertain yourself.!

My son clearly admitted the comment made by MarkJ that Microsoft choose not to continue support and improvement of XP but instead they created new programs, 7, 8, 10 making it easier to make more money!

Finally let me assure everybody that I am a pensioner but not destitute and I can afford to travel 2-3 times a year... abroad. Of course this year.... the Corona virus will curtail our travelling.

When you decide to use it, you won't need to buy an antivirus program. Windows Defender that comes with Windows 10  is an excellent virus program unlike past attempts by Microsoft to make one. Running two antivirus programs isn't helpful and even slows down your computer.

Wiz,

Markje was informing you, in detail,  why you stubborn continuing with your XP relic would mean you got 'errors'.

Nothing you've written suggests you are absorbing...

Do you realise your refusal to use the gift of the new pc you have gathering dust proves how stubbornly senile you come across?

No one cares if you get hacked, but your asking us to link youtube vids in a manner to suit you, and you only, in all likelihood, speaks volumes as to your self-imposed 'plight' ..

Move  with the times or join the dinosaurs, Wiz

Mark,

Could you possibly recommend some sort of security for an iPhone 6S?

Thx in advance

Wiz, it is clear that you are just playacting. Playing at being a curmudgeon - and an ungrateful one at that. How do you think your rello feels about the gift he gave you being rejected?

Markje explained to you the points I made about how your pc can affect others. And don't forget, you did moan about this site not functioning correctly and the problem was at your end - and not for the first time.

If you were the skint fellow unable to afford to have a secure online environment then you'd have my sympathy. However, you are portraying yourself as a selfish, ungrateful, old sod, rejecting the gifts, help and support offered and given by people who want to make your life better - and while they're at it, protect themselves from your 'dirty neighbourhood'.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!
