When Was You Last in the FSU And/Or Back in Her Country?
« on: January 24, 2020, 04:53:07 PM »
Prompted by NS1:

I haven't been in over 5 years now, but thinking about it soon.

I also haven't been in Russia for several years now.

Wifey and dochka visit there once or twice a year.

We had the folks over a few weeks ago for a visit, first time they have been to the UK in quite a few years.

In terms of general FSU travels, I had something to do in Estonia for a couple of days last week, so it was nice to be back there again, mooch about my old haunts, see a couple of pals. Estonia was where my FSU journey first began back in the late 90s.

What about you?

It has been 12 years since I have been to Russia.  Do to my health that may have been my last.

The wifes folks live here and have their 'Grin Cards' so we haven't been back. The parents go back once a year for medical treatments. It's cheaper to do that then to get them insurance here.

Last time I was in Ukraine was 2016. Haven't been going to the FSU as often now compared to when I was single and in the hunt.
Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776. If you want to stop the war in Ukraine, fix elections, stop medical tyranny and forced vaccinations, lower inflation and make America and the world a better place, get Trump back into power. The Democrats and Republicans have shown they can't do the job. They are good at robbing us and getting people killed in non stop wars.

Excellent topic,

I haven't been back since we got married 5 years more
than 5 years ago.

Angel Eyes and mini me have been back a couple years
ago. We are making plans about heading back early this
year. Family changes are bringing us back.

We go to Ukraine every year. Our girls go to gymnastics camp in the summer so wifey spends the entire summer there.
I also think it’s important to maintain links to the language and culture.

We also do our dental checkups while there.

Last year for two weeks, year before for 3 weeks, before that we missed a couple of years for the first time, but now my wifes parents are no longer with us, there is not as many reasons to go back, apart from seeing the sister/brother in law and wifes old friends and just because I still like going there, even after 15+ years.

I miss going, I enjoyed the differences.
Typically I only take a couple weeks a year now
for vacation and we prefer going some where warm
Trying a Caribbean cruise this year, our first cruise ( not sure if will like or not)
But the wife goes every 2 years, not to visit family, most of which is in
Germany. A few friends and a serious spa week. She books most in advance.
Massages every day, facials etc, etc.

I miss the food, cafe's and architecture. Just different.
I hope in next year or so to go over for visit, she tells me
much has changed and lots for the better.

That begs the question: Do you have the proper cast iron bbq to make Shaslik on?

I cannot understand someone who marries a women from another country and cant be assed to go back to her home country now and again.. it's a bit weird if you ask me!

I mean you marry a women from another culture usually because you like that culture and style but once you got her in your place you forget about her home country??

It means you nearly got exactly what you did not want in the first place? A Western women

I'm in residence a couple of months each year at least. Having 2 summers becomes a way of life after 20 odd years,
Steve, I get you, but most men don't "love" the culture, they only wanted the wife that it produced.

Hmm, I think the Georgians / 'Abkhazians' might disagree with you, there ;)   They might have a point, too

Been married for over 20 years to Ukrainian.  Been there over 25 times.  We are going this summer for 1 month.  I cant fathom not going there, especially as long as her mother is still living.

Yes I agree.. BUT the women it produced can very easily turn into the women you was trying to get away from? Maybe for example you will arrive in Russia meet some hot women who likes to dress in her high heels and so on and by the time you marry her and take her back home within a few years she has become like the local villagers and spends all day walking about in her slippers I know this is not often the case but it happens! Then the guy thinks ***** my wife is worse than the locals im going back looking for another one.. :chuckle:

Steve, based on two things I seen this morning, her culture is fine.
I should post a pic of her returning from the grocery store, I swear
she was going out for an event lol, so fine on that front so far  tiphat

Going back, well its a bit complicated, when I was searching I was one person with decent income
and took off more time than I should have to  do it.

Now married and she has no family there she doesn't go that often.
I take a week in the spring a week in the fall and few weekends in summer now.
She often goes in May or June which is bad timing for me.

2nd she works part time, I work full time plus :) So she can take an extra 10 days that I don't.
When I am discussing with her where to go in spring, she often wants warm climate, so that's where we go.
Fall is often last minute thing for anywhere from 5 to 8 days and its always been somewhere she has not seen yet :)

As much as I miss it, for me its just the way it works out.

I goto Crimea every year to visit the Inlaws.

My wife goes for 6 weeks usually, I join her for the last 3.

Nothing beats a relaxing sun/beach/summer vacation with the only worry in your mind what restaurant to pick for evening enjoyment

I usually goto Volodiya because it offers the best shaslick as fastfood (Usually served and on the table within 5 minutes)  in Evpatoria and the view is beautiful there.

When wanting for a true restaurant-experience mos'pizza and Hamlet come to mind.

I like Košice but my brother-in-law (a ravaged alcoholic) lost his balance on the way home from the drunk tank and dashed his head on the curbing. After 3 days in a coma he finally succumbed to the inevitable … on my birthday. Babička gave up the ghost in semi-squalor a couple of years later. My wife’s been back only once since then but there isn’t much incentive for me to make the journey any longer unless my craving for halušky gets to be more than I can endure.
