Why does this not surprise me.
Any place the makes you pay to do anything,
is likely doing similar type practices.

Most decent sites allow you in for free and give
you something. If you want more, then you have to pay for it.
Big business and scamming people is even bigger business.
There is nothing permanent except change.

Yes, Yahoo dating service was fined many years ago for this reason.

They asked their employees to meet Yahoo's dating service clients who paid Yahoo subscription fee!
