Hello From Scotland
« on: March 22, 2017, 09:08:04 AM »
Hi, just wanted to say I bought the book and am now on the web site to try and find my Soul Mate. I am genuine about finding Russian Love. I am interested in learning the Russian too. If anyone has any tips or help to give me any form of direction I would appreciate it. I was already a victim of a scammer, but I didn't pay any money.

Don't waste your time learning Russian. I can speak a bit of Russian, it is a great way to introduce yourself, make a woman laugh, i often nickname myself as Mr ochen khorsho man. But time is better spent at the Gym, dieting down, and earning more money, if you are already doing all of that, then continue learning Russian.

Oh yeah, join some pay monthly sites, and free sites. No pay per letter sites. Make a trip, and don't get stuck with the theory. Dating is dating, not really that hard, the only difficulty is finding a woman that is actually interested in you.

Pimsleur courses. They are specific, but imho the best.

It's odd but my son has picked up a lot of Russian which is odd when we never speak any now at home and never really did that much. Only time we hear it now is when N is on the phone to her mum, then it's all 'Vot, vot, tipo, tipo...' because she's forgotten so many Russian words. She even asks me mid-convo sometimes, what's 'market share' in Russian? And I'm like 'I don't know, Rinok-something?' which is completely wrong...

My lad is in the top 500 in the World in some game (Overwatch) and regularly hurls abuse in Russian to other players online. Ya ne ponimayu - Durak - Poshli na khoey (I taught him that one!) - suka sinom, quite funny really!

Not sure about learning the Russian but learning basics like the Cyrillic script and a few words to start off will stand you in good stead.
Best thing to do is get on a plane and go see FSU countries for yourself.
Meet some people, experience some of the culture, it's not for everyone.
Oh, and ignore Chickenbrah, he hasn't a clue.

Welcome to the forum,

I thought that Russian scammers weren't silly enough to try to get into the
pocket a Scott, did they get all their fingers back? I've read the book as well.
It's pretty good, the agency section is a bit outdated but you've found the
forum here and should be get yourself up to date with a bit of research.

Shameless Scottish joke

FSUW are not for entry level daters. FSUW don't do vague FSUW like a man of action so be a man of action  If you find a promising girl, get your butt on a plane. There are a hundred ways to be successful and a thousand ways to f#ck it up
Kiss the girl, don't ask her first.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you find what you seek. Yeah, and what someone else said about Chickenbrah....  Wanting to learn the tongue of the love of your life is not "a waste of time," in my opinion.

Welcome Kev.

I'm from the same part of the world as you and have been married to my wife coming on 5 years now. Plenty to learn on here and also lots of debate and argument to keep you interested in between.

Learning Russian is very important if you want to maximise the experience. Obviously communication is fundamental to a relationship but it'll also make your holiday experience much better with independence. When I first visited, I knew very little and had a great time. However, not being able to ask for simple stuff felt feeble and I started finding it very frustrating not knowing what was going on around me.

Normal rules apply, better to speak some local lingo when travelling alone because a tight T-shirt wont do shit.

Ask questions and enjoy.

I also think it's important to learn all you can about each other's cultural identity. I know it's not easy to learn Russian for a native English speaker (it's true of the opposite as well); but can you really bond with another person without understanding their identity?
No matter the level of education, each and everyone of us is formed within predominant cultural patterns of our respective society. Of course it's possible to have body-mate level of relationship, but i don't that's what the OP is looking for.
Besides, Russian culture is exciting and wonderfully deep. It's not a tedious task to study it  :)

Rosco, my friend, there's a wonderful advantage to the situation when you don't speak the language. Your significant other ascribes to you all the wonderful qualities that only a Russian soul can ascribe to a mortal... You (generic you) come across as charismatic and charming foreigner... Don't speak! Even if you learn Russian as a native, keep silent and repeat: Моя твоя не понимать!!! *

I get the feeling we've spoken about this one before Volshe  :-X but for the benefit of our new member from that wonderful country;

IMO - FSU ladies are far more impressed by men who are deeper, kinder, more thoughtful, resourceful, brave, reliable, ambitious and hard working, than a bloke who cares more for himself than he does for his date, talks utter nonsense and confuses confidence with hidden insecurity.

That's not aimed at anyone in particular but once you meet a lovely lady and her family, they'll care less about your biceps and more about the characteristics described above. The more of them you possess = the more of a man you are = more attraction. Physical attraction is important but it only gets you a seat in front of your date.

You speak Russian, you know this expression is very common: мужчина должен быть чуть краше обезьяны   ;D
(A man should be tad more handsome than a monkey.)
Look at model world, i think at the time we discussed that too. English-speaking high fashion models choose men who are physically attractive. Eastern European models choose smart and reliable men.
I am not saying that chickenbrah is not all of that, but he's very young and he's mostly into the physical now. Also, the gym is the place where's it's all about the body. Like in the summer heat at the beach, it's not the place for spiritual growth, but for swimming and sunbathing.
As a woman, what do i have long term from man's looks? Only headache  ;D
That being said, i must add: i am from Montenegro, and it is different here, it's like in the West. It's most important that the man is healthy and tall. (Same for women btw.) We have a "kick" for height and looks. (Nation who is traditionally warriors.) Character is equally important, but very specific: bravery. That he is not a coward. (Also comes from our history.)
Russians really pay attention to their language. It's of utmost importance for a Russian person to speak well Russian. (Many Americans couldn't care less that they don't have an extensive vocabulary in their own language.)
It is not possible to be a respected person without knowing Russian literature.
A man must be literate. (In Russia.) For us - he must be tall and brave. (Not for me personally, generally.)
So, yeah, it differs.
As you know, i am a writer. I make sure i meet people from all walks of life, not only one or another group. I had the possibility to chat with girls who hang around oligarchs (escorts.) They told me, about criteria how they are selected, that looks go without saying (and young age too), but that in Moscow per one for the girl it's equally important that she's eloquent (or she won't get invited to "темы" .)

This is why a man has three women, don't you know!

One is for sex and decoration, one is for making babies and one is for intelligent conversation.

Of course the man must have sex with all three, in order to keep good order, and it is helpful if they can at least tolerate each other's company, even if only for the sake of appearances.

In full seriousness: I have a Russian neighbor here in Monte, who, like me, has a medium sized dog. He says dogs that were brought from Russia do not understand commands in Montenegrin language. He also says his dog can not communicate with local dogs (he was referring to barking  ;D ). He's an intelligent and educated person and i presume he made his observations on some basis. I don't think there are any serious researches in the field, but i thought it an interesting idea.
Btw, his dog does get very excited when he sees mine. Mine is female (and a beauty, not that she's mine  :saint:) Obviously, no language barrier there!

Volshe - It's funny you mention how speaking well is considered important over East.

My wife often tells me after meeting someone that she doubts them because they used poor grammar or word choice. Again, it kind of emphasises that what you do and what you say, is going to be more important to a Russian girl than simply how you look.

All Russians (and Russian-speaking generally), especially educated ones, do that. It's the bases on which you judge/ estimate the person - their background, achievements, their past and their future.
Even if you hate the person, you'll notice that his/her ""язык хорошо подвешен."
Yes, i agree, it is a big deal.

I have long been of the unsupported opinion that dogs and cats speak local dialects. Of course it makes sense that pets do not understand commands spoken by somebody speaking in a different language to that with which they were trained or where the speaker is using a different accent.

Even as a foreigner I am often asked about my knowledge of Russian literature. Sadly I am still very limited in that area of life, but on the other hand, visitors tend to be impressed by my library even though it is almost entirely in English. I am always happy to find female visitors curled up in an armchair reading something or other from my shelves.

I think that erudite people the world over use vocabulary and linguistic skill as markers of intelligence, education and even social class, this is not just a Russophone thing.
