UN health agency addresses climate change and health.
« on: August 28, 2014, 01:42:03 PM »
Taking action to reduce climate change and its consequences can improve people's health and save lives, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
WHO has, for the first time, convened a global conference on climate and health in Geneva which has brought together government ministers, experts, scientists and members of civil society.
The agency says that changes in energy and transport policies can save lives by preventing the seven million premature deaths caused by air pollution every year.
Dr Maria Neira is Director of health and environment at WHO.
"We can reduce dramatically non-communicable diseases- cardiovascular diseases, heart disease, respiratory diseases – by promoting for instance, a more sustainable low carbon society where, instead of using very pollutant solid fuels we will move into a more sustainable energy consumption and therefore by doing so, we will obtain plenty of benefits for our health." (25")
WHO says measures to adapt to climate change can also save lives around the world by ensuring that communities are better prepared to deal with the impact of heat, extreme weather, infectious disease and food insecurity.
Derrick Mbatha, United Nations.
