Angel Eyes garden is starting to show up on the table
each meal. I can't wait until the tomatoes are ready.
The radishes are huge!

I never saw a radish so big!  :eeekk:

I bought many jars and lids specially designed for (safe) canning, but Angel
Eyes sees absolutely no difference between an old pickle jar and a canning
jar with a never before used lid.

So far nobody has gotten poisoned and I have forbidden her to give away
preserves canned in a recycled mayonnaise jar, but she ignores any and all
of my protestations.

Angel Eyes has a slurry bucket of water where she puts old watermelon rinds
chopped vegetable ends, potato peels, old tea bags etc. She lets it stew in the
sun for a day (she used to do this for longer but knows that I will pour it out if
it starts to smell or attract flies) then douses the liquid over her vegetables and
flowers.

It's sort of Russian compote for plants.

We do quite a bit of canning and use (almost) exclusively Ball brand jars and accessories. Of course the glass jars and retaining rings can be re-used after a run through the dishwasher but the lids must be replaced each cycle because the pressure seal is single-use.

Have you asked Angel Eyes how she seals her recycled food jars? As you point out, improperly sealed preserves can spoil and result in sickness. You could probably invest in the equipment necessary to seal those commercial containers but it would most likely be expensive and you'd still have to purchase new lids. We can get a dozen Ball lids for about two bucks, I think.

A local store to me currently has 24 Ball lids on sale for $5.00.

I mostly bought Ball and Kerr jars, yeah the lids are cheap. I mostly restock
supplies at Amazon. Angel Eyes doesn't argue about it, she just uses whatever
jar is next in her collection. She is like the Borg resistance is futile.

HOWEVER, in the past it was like 50-50 whether the jar was a canning jar
or a used olive jar. I've bought more jars every year and if you look, it's
closer to 80-20 now. We will see how it goes.

I dont see an issue with that personally for pickles or stuff suspended in water/vinegar, etc. For other stuff a layer of cling film would seal it before the reused lid goes on for the pedant. Recycling jars this way is pretty standard across the FSU. My inlaws do it and as they are both late 60s and haven't succumbed to jar-lurgy yet. Although much of it lives in fridges or a cool winter balcony. I'd question having such jars roasting in the warm weather someplace. I'm with Angel Eyes on that one.

Angel Eyes hasn't keeled anyone so I pretty much eat whatever she puts in front
of me, but when we give something away to Joe Sixpack, I insist she use the new
jars and lids. It's sorta like gifting used tupperware or a half bottle of Scotch.

It snowed and all of Angel Eyes tomatoes died. It happens every year
and I'm never ready to go back to the crappy store bought tomatoes
but Angel Eyes is always ready to move on probably because she does
95% of the garden work (or more).

The snow seems very wet and I suspect when it melts you will see the tomatoes are fine.

If you knew there was snow/cold coming a simple plastic tarp would have assured no damage. The earths natural warmth would have been captured within. Assuming they are staked this is easy to do.

A greenhouse is for those who live in hot houses.

Yes, in the past we put up a tarp and saved the tomatoes for a week or so.
We had 22F temperatures the next day and that will kill any tomatoes that
aren't in a greenhouse.

Angel Eyes gets tired of gardening each fall. She puts a Herculean effort into it for
months and now is tending her knitting (literally).

install a small greenhouse.

We've talked about it but decided against it this year. Since we just moved here in April
as renters Angel Eyes is loath to spend money on it, but when we do buy a place she is
far more interested.

104F - Hot Dang - Actually had to go to regional meetings in Austin in the Summer years ago - 107F in the Shade for an entire month and 101 at night - best thing about Austin are its winters if you dodge Flood Season, Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Summer in Texas - even the scorpions and rattlesnakes hide in the shade during summer days.

Not really, but after leaving North Dakota I've decided not to complain
about the heat. At least I can feel my toes.

Rushing around with a Russian woman in Texas
« Reply #823 on: September 01, 2019, 01:08:50 PM »
Update

Angel Eyes had a birthday so she and Mini me came down
to see me in Austin. We went rental house hunting and spent
some time outside.

I was over 100F (38C) and the humidity was between 50 and
60% and we hadn't found a house that she liked for the price
she liked.

She is usually a trooper to whatever comes but she got a bit
wilty after being outside too much. I took her to the office and
she talked to the owner of the company I'm doing work for.
He asked her how she liked Texas.

She said "not too much, eet's too hot" I knew I had some work
to do.

So I took her to Lake Travis, and the River and drove around
the rolling hills filled with trees. The next day we went to Padre
Island and she got to frolic around in the Gulf's warm waters.

Since Colorado is a landlocked state with limited fish (pronounced
feesh) I took her to a restaurant and ordered a half dozen different
types of feesh for the center of the table and then we helped
ourselves to what we wanted.

I also ordered her a Ginger beer (non alcoholic) and she also
drank a regular beer.

We headed back to Austin and I asked her to take another look
at Zillow for a rental house. She found a couple that came out
that very day so we drove to two of them but the third one she
really liked. The homeowners were moving out and making
repairs so I knocked on the door.

They let us in and showed us around and Angel Eyes really liked
the house AND the rental price (rarely happens) so they sent
an email to their agent and I sent one to ours and we locked
it up. It's official, the 2talls are moving to Austin.

I took Angel Eyes out to a crab shack and we spent one last
night together before I put her and Mini me on a plane back
to Colorado. Angel Eyes was lucky on the trip back that
Mini Me reviewed all the safety features of the aircraft
in the event of an emergency.
