British Men and Marriage Agencies for UK Documentary?
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:03:16 AM »
Hi guys

I am working on a documentary film for UK television. The film will be about the growth and diversification of online marriage agencies. More and more men seem to be turning to international marriage brokers and I am keen to talk to them about their experiences, whether they are married or looking for marriage online.

No obligations to take part yet and calls will be in confidence. I am looking to speak to UK men in particular.

It would be great to hear from anyone interested, especially people with good knowledge of the online marriage market.

My contact details are:

lheightonginns@ronachanfilms.co.uk

Many thanks

Laura

The difficulty you will encounter in finding men to participate with your programme is that the media usually attempts to make a mockery of international relationships - despite claiming they wont - because the truth of most couples likely doesn't make good TV.

Most programmes of this nature tend to follow some tour in Ukraine (which isn't where most guys meet a wife) and highlight socially inept, often poor men (and most that are married are quite the opposite). Can you point us to any previous documentaries you have been involved in so that members may see the production style?

Also, is any participation remunerated?

There are many here that are UK based who have excellent knowledge of this whole endeavour, both as participants and in the business. However, you will need to give more background on the project before you will get any meaningful participation I suspect.

Hi Manny

Thanks for your reply.

Yes there can be renumeration. It is usually negotiable and depends on the budgeting for the film. We also look to involve people with a genuine interest in providing an insight to the issue we are documenting.

I understand your concerns. The company I am working for, Ronachan Films, has a reputation for integrity and sensitivity to its subjects. We most regularly contribute to the BBC reportage strand This World, for which we recently documented the revolution in Egypt (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01bpq8t), but also tackle serious social issues including with the three part series Our Drugs War (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/our-drugs-war) for Channel 4. Angus my boss has worked extensively in the former Soviet Union so brings a developed understanding of Ukrainian culture, but I recognise the Ukrainian market isn't necessarily a reflection of the bigger picture.

We wish to make a comprehensive film that looks at the international dating scene in the context of a falling UK marriage rate (2009 had the lowest number of marriages in the UK for over a century) and record divorces.

I'd be interested to talk to you at more length Manny, if willing?

To reiterate, at this stage conversations are confidential.

With thanks

Laura

You might have tried to get some actual facts-- not what they had in mind.

Sharon, you sound like you are stuck in neutral and not moving. Put it in drive and go.  :smokin:
