Has any member ever gone so-called mushroom hunting in Ukraine or Russia?

No, but it seems that there may be plenty of Mushrooms thinking of hunting in the FSUW  :coffeeread:

I have always wondered about the wild ones and I also understand in North America the mushrooms is a bit like Australia and animals, most will kill you one way or the other.

Not true, there are many perfectly edible mushrooms. These include morels, boletes and one my favorite the shaggy mane.

Yes I am certain there are good ones here as well as perfectly poisonous ones in abundance.

You wrote: most will kill you. This is not quite correct. Some will kill you, many will make you sick, some are edible, but are not considered particularly tasty, and some are perfectly edible. With a bit of training, it is easy enough to identify the lethal ones from the edible ones.

One of the deadliest mushrooms in our corner of the world and elsewhere is the Death cap (Amanita phalloides). I spotted one once next to a trail. You definitely do not want to pick and eat any of these  :-X

With a degree of confidence some will say no Clint died in this film and that.

But I remember a rather young Clint Eastwood being poisoned to death by sweet young girls with mushrooms that they had collected.

It did give me a healthy respect of women and there mushroom collecting skills!

It isn't that difficult. However, I would not recommend eating random mushrooms, especially if they have a greenish tinge  :-X

Has any member ever gone so-called mushroom hunting in Ukraine or Russia?

Once in the Dordogne I did this with some expat and locals. The French called them cepes I think. We first had a repast of sausages, pate and other edibles together with a fair quanity of vieux a sort local distilled prune alcohol. By the we set out at 7 am I wondered if we could see anything.

I understand now is the season in Ukraine/Russia what is it like? Which mushrooms are they harvesting.

Some time ago I posted my experience of mushroom hunting in UA. Even posted pictures.

Then I posted an article from the NYTimes where they talk about Russians/Ukrainians  getting lost, sometimes forever, while hunting for mushrooms. I can understand this. The place I went to, everywhere you looked was the same and it was easy for me to lose my bearing.

I checked, the cèpes are boletes (Boletus edulis and other edible boletes) and are the mushrooms that the Russians refer to as белые грибы.

Hunting truffles now a days is likely becoming a trend not just because of the the variety of culinary use of it but it also comes with a very high price tag. A lot of people would pay extra just to get a hold of a very delicious, delicate, and hard to find truffles. On the question how expensive truffles really are, you can read and watch this article about truffle hunting to learn more here https://www.trufflemagic.com/blog/magic-truffle-hunting/
