Do you gain or lose weight while visiting?
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:08:16 AM »
I've only been back in Romania less than two weeks and I'm already having trouble getting my pants on in the morning  :innocent: Romanian food is delicious and, I'm not just saying that because I'm with a Ro woman... Also having kiosks that sell pastries, pretsiles, etc. everywhere does not help.

Do you gain or lose weight when you visit Ukraine or Russia? Borscht is okay and, Kiev chicken is pretty good but, things like pickled herring  :sick0012: What Ukrainian or Russian food helps you put on the most weight?

Paul,

As you know, I'm not exactly "visiting."

If you indulge in the typical FSU sweet tooth, it is very easy to gain weight. For those who haven't been, there are sizable portions of each supermarket here devoted to candy and to pastries of all sorts. As with supermarkets everywhere, they would not devote so much space to these things if they weren't big sellers.

However, I am diabetic so my intake of such things is severely limited. Also, I have trained myself to stop eating before I feel full--which has helped me to lose weight at a slow, controlled pace since I've lived here. In the past two years, I'm down about fifteen kilograms, in fact.

Most of the foods we eat are quite nutritious, prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients. That also contributes to controlling weight. (I also control my intake of potatoes, which as you know are huge here--again because they are highly glycemic).

If you think you have a problem with weight maintenance now, just wait until your lady is with you full time! As you probably know, married men tend to be heavier than single men anyway.

Same here, for example, Ada has never had mayonnaise bought from a store, it has always been homemade. Ada does not own a can opener and, when I offered to buy one when we were at a store together, she said "what for, I can use a knife when I need to open a can", which does not happen often.

It was never an issue when I was married to an American woman,.. who would not have known a can or can opener if one bit her on the @$$ (for different reasons).

I presume Romania is like Ukraine or Russia, in that mayonnaise is HUGE. When I first came full time, I joked that Irina was the "mayonnaise queen"...she has since moderated it in foods for me as I don't go for *quite* as much as she likes.

She also remains suspicious of using vinegar on salads, by the way--and I have yet to see lettuce in the stores or markets here. During my trip to the States this past Summer, I made up for lost time on the salad front!

I also keep several kinds of vinegar here, and add it to many salads in addition to the oil that is already on them. I had to show my wife on the Internet the references that refer to a regular bit of vinegar as being good for me. Previously, she mostly used it as a cleaner.

Yes, it is used in just about every salad that you can imagine.

Vinegar is used here mostly for pickling vegetables but, it can be found in chain restaurants as a dressing occasionally as well.

The oddest thing I have seen so far in the supermarkets here is celery root being available and not celery stalks (and some other similar things).

For some reason, I don't gain weight, even when put on an arteriosclerosis diet.

I know in my last trip to Moscow - Volgograd - Tallinn in September 2010, I lost 12 pounds even though I thought I ate rather well during the trip

Cause I speculate is walking: to the Metro, from the Metro, to and from the destination from the Metro Station, walk to and from the market and stores, etc.

Celery root, also called celeriac, and celery stalks actually come from two totally different varietes.  You really wouldn't want to eat the stalks from the variety that you get celeriac from.

In all my trips to UA I lose an average of 10 pounds. Keep in mind that almost everyday we are visiting there is a party so the pivo, vodka, cognac, and samagon will flow freely and the artery clogging delicacies are in abundance.

It has to do with all the walking I do while there; 10 miles +/- 3 a day. Remember we live in the village so we walk to the marshutka station, walk to the kiosk, walk everywhere since I am still a tourist, etc.

Try to get out and walk 1-2 hours a day.  Also carry your luggage up and down 6 flight of starts with no elevator several times a day.  Doing this and you can eat all day.

I usually lose a few pounds. I have had a number of FSUW who thought it was
their goal in life to get me to eat extra food. I stop eating when I am full and all
the extra walking keeps it off
FSUW are not for entry level daters. FSUW don't do vague FSUW like a man of action so be a man of action  If you find a promising girl, get your butt on a plane. There are a hundred ways to be successful and a thousand ways to f#ck it up

I love all vinegar dressings, my hubby doesn't like them at all. Many RW mentioned on forums that they switched to Vinegar dressings from mayo when they discovered them

The lack of walking has definitely been a contributing factor to the weight gain. I must do more of it, starting tomorrow.

When I was over there last year I actually lost weight for the first week or so.  It was once the giant 3 and 4 course meals started that I put it all back on.

It was quite hot when I was there so that kinda killed my appetite a bit.  I imagine in cooler weather I probably would have gained more.

На мой взгляд наиболее способствующим набору веса из украинских и русских блюд являются вареники, пирожки, галушки, пельмени...все что с тестом

In my opinion, the most contributing to weight gain from Ukrainian and Russian dishes are dumplings, pies, dumplings, dumplings ... all that with dough
