are 'department stores' called department stores or are they referred to as something else?

What would be the FSU `equivalent` of say a Walmart/Sears/JCPenny/Macy's or the like is there an `equivalent` to HomeDepot/Lowes?

Department stores are referred to as universal (multipurpose) stores (UNIVERMAG).

A mall like a Walmart would be a trade center here (TORGOVY TSENTR).

Stirlitz,

I think you may have misunderstood Walmart.

WalMart is actually a single store which may be found either 'free-standing' or as part of a much larger (usually a 'strip') mall.

Walmart is usually a department store but now they are building new stores that they call supercentres (supercenter in the US or superstore) or a hypermarket a term that is used in Europe. It is a combination department store, supermarket, pharmacy, auto centre etc., basically it sells the customer everything that they would need for their family.  A European equivalent would be the French Carrefour chain of hypermarkets.

Yeah, I remember them opening one location next to Gorbushka last year... only to close it a few months after.

Now there's another Auchan there...  (:)

Okay, here is a crossword puzzle using the Russian Cyrillic alphabet. For the first 2 members who can find these short and easy words, I'll mail you a nice Russian prize of some sort, likely Russian cookies or candy via my West Coast USA office.



Find these words:
лет (years) "lyet"

бог (God) "bog"

интернет (Internet, so easy, i-n-t-e-r-n-e-t spelled and sounds the same!)

работа (work) "rah-bow-tah"

ночь (night) "noch"

суп (soup) "Sueph"

царь (Tsar, King, Caesar) "Tsigh" Think of "sigh" with a T in front, not like the common mis-transliterization of Czar. "Tsigh"

холод (cold) "kho-laud"

боль (pain) "bowl"

крест (a Cross) "Krest"

да (yes) "dah"

секс (sex) "seks"
                             
There are others but I wanted to keep the words easy as not to overwhelm new learners.

Rules:
1- You must NOT be a native Russian or Ukrainian speaker, neither have lived or currently live in the FSU.

2- You must circle the words you found and post a photo of the completed puzzle here.

The decision of judges (myself and native speakers on the forum) is final. Any additional rules set by forum administration will apply.

Poems are very difficult to translate if you're not a native speaker...

Using better punctuation she probably meant to write this: Я возьму в ладони счасте, к сердцу бережно прижму, разделю его на части, всем раздам, кого люблю!!!

Thank you kindly.  By splitting it up I was sorta able to piece it together, seems to be from Shakespeare Hamlet I think. Interestingly enough it offers some insight, as it's not something I would have expected from her.  I still have much to learn:)
