OK, if you are taking the castle tour of the Ukraine you need to include Khotyn Fortress.  It's about 30 minutes by mini-bus from Kamyaints-Podilskiy.  The site is well know for how complete the castle is and is supposedly the site for many movies because of this.  Now what I will say is that there is not much else to see in Khotyn so keep it as a stop if you are passing through or a side trip from K-P.

This site is somewhat historic as it was a Rus stronghold on the Dniester river, but it changed hands often as it was located along an important trade route.  One of the attacks which is depicted in some of the tourist information at the site was the 1476 attack by the Turks which was successfully repelled and again in 1621.

When visiting you'll want to see the high castle walls and towers and like much of the Ukraine, you are not really restricted in where you can go.  Besides the somewhat small castle walls and the much more extensive fortress walls which were build over the years but are now mostly overgrown.

When you arrive, get out at the bus station and take a taxi to the fortress.  My tour book said you can walk, but if you are short on time, spend the three dollars and take the taxi.

I have been to this castle 4 times in the past 5 years it is impressive but the better one is in Kamenets-Podolsky. It is better to catch a taxi from Kamenets-Podolsky to see this castle or drive by yourself.

I have not eaten at either castle before as I was being a true tourist and trying to fit too many things into my schedule (eating a relaxing meal was not one of them).  But, I think if you have a chance to eat at Khotyn, overlooking the river it must be a great experience, call it a nice travel tip as I know it was not mentioned in my guide book.

Ahhh there would be many things around the western side of Ukraine that would not be mentioned in any travel books man i really love the carpathians and some of the beautiful resorts around Kamenets some are in some way out of the way places.

As you and i both know mate guys only traveling to Kiev miss out on so much of Ukraine both Nat and myself have travelled around a fair bit through western ukraine most of her family and friends are in the rural areas as well different type of people all together in these areas compared to the cities.
The hospitality shown in most of the out of the way places has to be seen to be belived.

I'll second that opinon, the people were very friendly, especially some of the older Babushka's and Daduskha's.  I try to convince people that the area is worth visiting just as a tourist destination and I think it's starting to pick-up, especially in cities like Lviv.
