As for my Russian, I have been tested at a 4 on a scale of 1 - 5, with 5 being native fluent.  But for those of you who think this is an advantage, it's not. Meeting a RW or UW who speaks English means she has a better knowledge of Western/American culture and have found I have "clicked" better with them.  With women who only knew Russian, there was a huge cultural barrier.

That statement could be a whole new topic on its own around here, it flies in the face of what many others are saying  Grin

This was split off from Putins Introduction thread here, as I think it is worthy of a discussion on its own.

As for my Russian, I have been tested at a 4 on a scale of 1 - 5, with 5 being native fluent.  But I did live and work there for a number of years.  But for those of you who think this is an advantage, it's not.

I do think it is a great advantage. Even if a girl speaks fluent English to build relations with someone who speaks her native language too is really an advantage.
One of the complaints I was getting from girls living abroad is that they can't argue with their men, as when they started arguing ladies were using Russian and men didn't understand anything  Smiley so for you it won't be a problem to understand why your lady argues with you  8)

If I could speak Russian Putin, I think I would beating ladies off with a stick, literally. The ability to put them at ease in their own language is invaluable and shoiuld not be slightly dismissed.  Grin  I wouild give my dentures away to be able to speak Russian like you. Think of it, the ease of explaining something American to your Russian lady in detail. That is why so many of us try to learn Russian. That and it is only fair if we expect them to learn English we should learn Russian. When I finally marry, I want to speak Russian at home and English every where else!  8) A semi-total immersion in Russian so I can learn it better.  hiding under chair -Robert

Just speaking Russian doesn't mean that every lady will fall in love with you  Smiley I met an american guy who really thought so, his outlook and behavior were terrible and of course nobody was interested in him, and he couldn't understand why is it so. He said - Hey, I'm American and I speak Russian, what else do they want?! laugh

On day one of my first visit to Russia, my friend in Moscow taught me my first bit of colloquial Russian, 'klassnaya popka' - I got nowhere with it!

 Rofl  Don't even kid yourself?  Speaking Russian doesn't make anyone a babe-magnet.  It may facilitate the opportunities to meet women but, it isn't some magical aphrodisiac.

That is why so many of us try to learn Russian.

That's not why I studied it!  I wanted to familiarize myself enough to be able to navigate on my own to places like the grocery store, restaurants, bars/cafes, and to be able to tell a taxi driver my destination.  Playing-the-field was never a consideration.  My guess is that very few of us studied the Russian language to go over there and chase women.

When I finally marry, I want to speak Russian at home and English every where else!

Let me know how ya do with conjugating those verbs?  Grin  If they don't stop an English-speaker from learning Russian, I don't know what will!  Good Luck!

IMHO verbs are easy - apart from aspects, they even those are easy compared to noun and adjective inflection, I've battled with that for years, got most of it in my head now, but the 'exceptions' are now my downfall, 'in the forest' should be 'v lese' (I think) but it isn't it's 'v lesu' cos it's an exception and something to do with being a remnant of some other long lost noun inflection like ablative or something....

SWMBO helps enormously by saying 'you just have to know it....' and she's got two degrees in interpreting/translation, A Russian one not bought for and a UK one that cost a freaking fortune.

All things being equal, speaking Russian makes things incredibly easier for a number of reasons based on what I have been reading on these forums. I don't know about Don's guy in Ukraine, but I fared quite well  king The advantages:

  • You can meet and understand all women in Russia as opposed to much smaller proportion that speak your language;
  • You can much more easily visit cities well of the beaten track without having to worry about translators or English-language services;
  • You can much more easily meet women who have never dated a foreigner which is a blessing based from what I have read;
  • You can much more easily use Russian dating sites or other such means where you have millions of profiles set up directly by women usually without intermediaries, sites where there are few foreigners;
  • You actually understand what she is saying to her friends and family members, which helps to figure her out that much faster;
  • Yes, you can just meet women at cafes or walking around town from time to time;
  • You can actually date without having to feel you are being babysat by a woman who must translate everything for you.

Yes, some guys will be pretty clueless even if they know Russian, but they will still have a huge advantage over the clueless guys who know no Russian  tiphat

This is why my relationships have failed.  I knew exactly what she was saying when she argued with me and when she was on the phone gossiping with her friends.

But to comment on what else has been written, it is useful going off the beaten path.   When I first went back to Russia in 1998, I was surprised how quickly American men would get a girlfriend.  Then I figured it out, they needed these girls to go food shopping, get a haircut, explain things to their landlord, and explain to the doctor what their medical problem was.  I could do all this myself and whenever I met a girl, I would keep telling myself, don't rush because there could be better out there.  This is why I came back from Russia empty handed after three years, I kept waiting for something better and never realized what I had.

This time, things are different and I am older and wiser.

I don't think your knowing or not knowing Russian was a factor. It would have been just as easy for the guys who did not know any Russian to change girlfriends and come back alone after three years.

 laugh  I'll admit that I sometimes cut-loose with either a, "zayabis" a "Huyak!" or a "bliyats" in the presence of my wife's friends, just to make them laugh.  I love to hear them blame her (undeservedly) for 'teaching' me Russian words, like those.  It was actually my wife's friends in Minsk who deserve all the blame.
