Awesome!

I forgot almost all of my Russian today.

But, it would have been nice to be able to ask:

"Where are you from?"

I was told in Russia Sonja (perhaps) zonija means sleepy head?

Is this true - can one refer to a special woman this way with out risking getting slapped?
it is and it is not considered to be insulting. She probably knows she sleeps too much  Smiley Pronounced with S not Z and if writing don't write it with capital

я голодный  [yah  gah-lawd-nyj] = I'm hungry!

Can you give us a literal translation of that Ed? "Yah" of course is "I".

How do we pronounce "nyj"? That isn't Latin transcription.

Is it nizhe, nerge, or maybe nyж?

I'm not sure how else to spell out "nyj" . "Nee" is not really it since it doesn't have the "й " at the end this way, which is an important sound and must be pronounced. Manny, maybe you can ask Olga to say it for you in Russian and you could spell it out with Latin letters then?

just thought of something, you know how you say "I" in english? In Russian you would spell it out as "aй" [ahj]. You see what I mean?  "ый" will have the same ending as "aй" but instead of the "a" sound use the "ы" [yj]. I don't know if I made it understandable. let me know   Big Grin

Here is a word you'll need in your travels to the FSU: Крокодил [krah-kah-deel] crockodile. naughty boys also use this word for an unatractive girl.

Thinking back to my visit to Kiev last week - I thought I would check out the etymology of the French word Bistro.

Here is what Wikipedia states.

"The word bistro may derive from the Russian быстро (bystro) which means quickly. According to an urban legend, it entered the French language during the Russian occupation of Paris in 1815. Russian cossacks who wanted to be served quickly would shout "bystro." However, this etymology is not accepted by several French linguists as there is, surprisingly, no occurrence of this word until the end of the 19th century."

I wonder are there other words like language that are common to English or French that have in fact a Russian foundation? I assume kremlin would be one example.
