Mad Money - Russian week
« on: April 10, 2008, 02:55:03 AM »
Anybody watch "Mad Money" with Cramer on CNBC?  It's a daily TV show where a crazy guy gives really good stock tips.

This week he is focusing on investing in companies from the FSU...Monday was a Steel company (MTL) http://www.cnbc.com/id/23995654 Tuesday was a Beverage company http://www.cnbc.com/id/24013641, and today was a Russian broadcasting company http://www.cnbc.com/id/24037112

The guy is wacky, but he knows his stuff, and he made his millions in the market before doing this program. I'm just starting to get into this again, but just doing research at the moment, the market is too volatile to risk putting too much money in (like I have any  :chuckle:)

Investing in Russian stock might not be a bad idea at the moment, their economy is rolling along pretty good. Many American companies are looking to Russia now, my former employer PepsiCo just recently bought into a Russian beverage/juice company and they are doing very well. Something to think about anyway, our dollars might actually grow over there  :o

Well, my thread didn't get much attention, guess there isn't too many stock market players here, but really it was an interesting look into the economy of Eastern Europe and Russia. They are thriving right now, and the stocks are under valued for the amount of growth going on over there.

Anyway, check out the links, there are video clips of the Russian part of the show, Cramer is in full Soviet era mode, Paintings of Lenin and Stalin, Borscht and Vodka. Big surprise he recommends a Polish Vodka and premium liquor company that also exports to Russia.

As Poles make more money, they’re trading bottom shelf vodka for more expensive brands like Skyy. Cognac drinkers are reaching for Remy Martin, scotch drinkers for Glenfiddich, brandy lovers for Rayne and St. Remy, and beer fans for Guinness. CEDC distributes all these brands plus about 900 others.

CEDC’s making a power move into Russia, too. The company bought 85% of Parliament Vodka, a premium name that fits in nicely with the liquor upgrade story. CEDC also has 75% of White Hall, a Russian importer of marquee brands like Hennessey and Dom Perignon.

I think we need a Russian/Ukrainian economy section where we can talk about doing business there, investing and real estate.

Chris, maybe you can put in a word to Manny, the chat section gets used more than anything else because we often don't see a proper place to post a topic.

Really, nobody cares about investement in the FSU?  ???  Even if you don't get CNBC (Europeans) you can go to the links, video is there too.

The best investment I ever made is in the Russian stock market.  After the crash in 1997 shares of the mutual fund LETRX fell from mid-$20's to low $2 in 8 weeks.  I knew the raw material assets that these companies were based on hadn't really declined at all so I took $10,000 and bought shares at $2.40 in September 1998.  Well, the stock is about $68 per share now, you do the math.

I was very close at the time, but I was not getting the right signals from the other end, they kept putting obstacles in my way, or things didn't just seem right, for whatever reason, my gut feeling told me something wasn't right, so eventually I pulled out. As it turns out, it was the right thing to do as the worldwide recession hit us and I know people over there that are still stuck with what they purchased around the same time and cannot offload it as planned.

Doing some DD on something I came across, very skeptical but just collecting information.  That's all.  Going to visit the site in about 30 days on my first trip over.

DD is very important, as it is anywhere, but knowing who you are dealing with is critical and knowing enough about the laws of the country and property/land ownership legalities etc is key.

I couldn't agree with you more.  I got a business opportunity or quite possibly I am a target of a scam.  But you know when you got this thing in your gut where you want to see where this goes.  That's my buy in.  It is nothing I have ever done before or had much interest in doing.  So I am reaching out in my network to either connect the right person for this opportunity or to investigate and expose yet another scam.  I don't know.  I guess that is why they call it an adventure, right?   :king:
