What exactly is educated?
« on: January 25, 2019, 04:49:12 AM »
We had family over for Christmas so thought we would go and watch "The marriage of Figaro" ...it was a three hour show, and christ by half time break we had to get out of there, I never sat watching so much shit in my life.

My parents are all into the theatre and art, father is a master of fine art and regularly visits all the London galleries, I remember being dragged around the VA and Tate in London many times, never did interest me art.. Mother is a member of the Royal photographic society and always showing me her new photography , Im not a photographic person either .. ;D

We also frequent a fair few nice restaurants , if we are in Moscow we always eat at the best places.. I don't know why as the dinner is pathetically small at most of the places, you can sit at a table surrounded by people all admiring their huge plates with just a few bits of food chucked on in a fancy way and made to look nice, of course half of them will be taking photos to post all over the place of some ridiculously small dinner on a huge plate that costs a ridicules amount of money ..
last time we went out in Moscow I need two main courses just to feel like I had some food in my belly..

So I was wondering does it make me uneducated not wanting to sit in a theatre for three hours watching people sing in Italian , not appreciating Art and not appreciating fine cooking.. ?

Steve,

The educated people seek to ensure their kids are well- educated and others send theirs to state run schools and boast of driving Range Rovers and holidays ..

Like many things, we learn to appreciate them over time and with experience. For example, it took me until just a couple of years ago to go to my first ballet. I enjoyed it because of the person I was with. Now I enjoy the ballet. :)

Food is kinda similar. OK, a lot of foody stuff is just pretentious crap, but good cooking is about flavours and textures and much less about portion size - after all, if a meal was always a belly buster it'd not be possible to enjoy great cooking without turning into a bloated mass.

Steve there is an expression 'Matters of taste are not subject to discussion'.

So you do not care for Mozart, no biggy in my book. You might enjoy the Stones or the Verve. Have read all of H. Thompson and tell the differences of various types of roe. I think more important is intellectual curiosity and what you do with the knowledge gained.

Ok so what about standing in an art gallery for 10 hours figuring out a painting? Surely that doesn't make you educated?

I do like a musical show though.. Chicago or Les Miserables..

But I also noticed having a particular pair of glasses and style of beard makes you intelligent..

'The clothes don't make the man.'

If it takes some one 10 hours to 'figure' out a painting they could better do something else with there time. My brother could not be more different than me. He can not see the difference between a work by a Dutch artist of the 17th century and a French Impressionist. He can not hear the difference between Beethoven and Bach nor could he understand if lines of a poem were from the 19th century or Post War period. Nonetheless credit to him he will drag his kids aged 10 to 14 through a museum.

Yet he is a better offshore sailor than I will be and is extremely handy at making repairs. Each of us have our strengths.

He does though have a nick name Ma... the Master of the Unfinished Project.

Well gazing at the "Venus of Urbino" at the Uffizi gallery would be worth spending 10 hours.  I am sure that you will learn a LOT.   :evilgrin0002:

Years ago, I used to sell hifi. When I started to work for the company I had cloth ears. Just give me heavy bass and treble that goes tizz, tttzz, tizz and make sure that I couldn't hear much hiss and I was happy.

After a while, with the help of my colleagues and the benefit of time to listen, I came to be able to discern what was actually good, where the output was a reasonable facsimile of the input and the necessary compromises where sensibly made. I learned how to package systems to meet differing criteria. I learned what good sound was.

I found that I did not have cloth ears!

That same process applies to many cultural pleasures. It might take time to learn differences between different aspects of food, music, paintings; time to learn what expertise represents - and what is just a crass imitation of expertise. But there is pleasure in doing so, at least for me. I'd say that almost anyone can learn to appreciate expertise and take pleasure from it - in almost any field that involves the senses and how experts harness our senses to communicate with our minds.

At the same time I understand that there's not enough time to learn to appreciate everything and also that some folks just can't be arsed to do so.

Stefan, don't write yourself off. There's a challenge and pleasure to be had from learning how to enjoy using our senses as best we can.

Almost everything you learn is learned from another person. How you put it together make the person you are.

Some people watch CNN all day and think they're educated.

Some people spend years in college and graduate with honors and think they're educated but truth is, they're not an expert in anything because they haven't put into practice what they learned.

My wife's dragged me to many an art museum and ballet production but has so far been unable to convert me. I'm not quite an arts philistine and can handle both in small doses but my attention span is shorter than many I suspect.

I'll happily wander round the Rijksmuseum or the Musee d'Orsay but don't ask me to stop and stare for 5/10 mins per piece. A slow constant march works best! Even worse, when I do stop for an upload and some bugger walks up and stands in front of you.......visions of rolling about fighting with rude Europeans fly through the mind!!  ;D

I've got myself ready for the ballet too, open minded with a positive head on. Love the music and the cognac at the intervals but after a while, it instantaneously bores the shit out of me. I then start to scan the audience and I've concluded that irrespective of location, be it Milan, Minsk, London, Paris or Edinburgh, people like me simply don't attend these things.

It's always full of posh old buggers, woman and gays. I swear.....every time!!

Thankfully the wife now has friends for 'the culture' and I don't get dragged along anymore. And I'm glad she has because the last couple even bored her and she's hardcore. I also think that 'the culture' isn't an accurate barometer for education or class either. I've sat through hours of the stuff thinking about this and I'm sure people even fake it. If they attend and come out saying how wonderful the Prima ballerina assoluta was, they'll think others will look up to them.

I tried, I really did but I just don't get it.

Like you, I've been dragged to many museums and the odd ballet. Not something I could do every day.

I'm not a fan of food that is messed about with too much. I don't need things nestling on other things, huge plates with drizzles of stuff on, minuscule portions or anything pretentious for the sake of it. I do like quality, and that usually means cooking at home. Very few restaurants - in the UK at least - are much good in my opinion. I did find an Argentinian steak house in Madeira recently that was outstanding though.

Hell Steveboy, you are from the UK where they teach looking down their noses at
people based on class and who your parents are. Educated is really a relative thing
I know people who can tell which grape was stomped on by fine maidens to make
wine and was machine pressed. That same person couldn't tell you the slope of a
roof if you gave them all the dimensions.

I know people who can tell you the date for the start and finish of any war, but can't
tell you the reasons that most of them started. Education isn't knowing about a few
things, it's a general knowledge of a wide range of things and knowing how and
where to learn more.

I don't think that what you were describing is necessarily related to education although
in my opinion everyone should have some education in fine arts.

These are choices. If you really want to just watch game shows, eat McDonald's, drink Thunderbird then that's great. But there's often better stuff.

Years ago, when it came to wine, I had no idea. Sweet(ish) and white was all I knew and all I thought I wanted. One day, a group of friends and I were fortunate to have a presentation from a wine importer. A very knowledgable fellow with a good selection of wines (all from the cellar of one of the friends who just happened to be the owner of a decent restaurant with a decent wine cellar). The wine merchant led us through wines, showed us what to look for, helped us to understand how the flavors and aromas worked. All of a sudden, it was like seeing in color for the first time.

Clive, the restaurateur was persuaded to wheel out some of his Ports, the wine merchant knew about these delights sitting in the cellar but had not sold them, they were from before his time. Clive, was no expert, but again the wine merchant chappy helped us to understand the flavors, the aroma, how to recognize good from crap. We all learned a lot and Clive was able to capitalize upon his new knowledge and in the months and years afterward sold a lot of Port.

Nowadays, I love me a nice glass of Port and I turn my nose up at the crappy, oxidized stuff that most folks wheel out as a special treat. (but I am, of course, polite and drink appreciatively).

Education, yes, of course. And without it, I'd still be drinking German Reisling and gagging on cheap Port and Sherry - if not simply turning it down.

We have a choice in these things. I like me a Big Mac, but I also know about how a steak is cut and aged, I know the difference between good and bad and I prefer the good. Without a little education, we just end up with the bad all the time and pretend to like it - or just reject every example.

Education isn't, as obviously some here think, a matter of what we learned in school, but is what we can learn every day.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

I think that mostly died out in the 70s, Bill. The Thatcher years freed us from much of the old stuffy class based stuff and we now have mostly a meritocracy.

Thats the only kind we have in Netherlands until 18+ years of age. Even the Royal family attends public schools.

I can't comment on RR's , i know far too little about them other than that they constantly peak in maintenance-costs and unreliability on all the charts in NL.

That was a long time ago when the UK had an Empire.. It's all finished now.. the country is generally full of thick'os who know nothing about life let alone history..

My farther is educated.. master of fine art and a degree in history he knows every single date of every major war or event in the world, we used to live in a Manor House right in the middle of the village.. 600 years old.. he even had his own library and collected valuable books.. he still has most of them.. ask him about the Russian Empire, The British Empire he knows all the answers.. :chuckle:

The funny thing is still half of the planet thinks everyone in the Uk is highly educated, maybe once upon a time.. not any more, just walk around London for a few hours and look at the zombies!! :sick0012:

Its one of my fathers paintings behind us..he's into Syrialism

My dad's brother is also a Master of art and a History buff , he worked for a big ad agency doing graphics for the Sunday supplements many years ago (We have a house full of Mick Jagger original transparencies) had a windmill in Cambridge , house in Ely but gave the lot up to become a Buddhist Monk  so now he travels the world on behalf of the Big Budda giving lectures on Buddhism to many famous people, does a bit of sculpturing during his free time..
He was here in St Petersburg 2 months back doing a lecture ..
