I cast another vote for apartments.

They're cheaper (for the location), more comfortable and have more amenities than a hotel. I've thrown parties at the apartments I rent. Can't quite do that in a hotel room.

You can book the same apartments through gotorussia.com and waytorussia.com. They throw in a free transfer from the airport or train station. Prices are a bit high and climbing, but locations are excellent.

Also for the more intrepid traveller you can ask your friends to find a private apartment for you. I've rented out a spare room or full apartment (while the owner went to stay with family for a few days). You can usually work out a very decent price which is a good deal for both you and the owner.

Just thought I would put up a notice that my Mother in-law who lives in St Pet might be an option for someone or a couple if they are looking to visit there and want to save some money on hotel fees.

She has a two bedroom flat where she lives alone. It's a average Kruschevsky stay flat (nothing fancy). Not to far from a metro stop.
There is a library in the same building and cafes and shops near by.

SHe is a pretty cool lady with a great sense of humor of course you would have use of the kitchen, the spare bedroom is recently wall papers (thanks to me) with a cable TV

Not sure how much she would charge but I would imagine somewhere around 35-50 a night.
