Old and New Foods
(1/1)
CzechMate:
What foods do you miss the most?
Were you able to obtain substitutes for ingredients that are not as readily available in non-FSU countries?
Which foods did you dislike? Did that change over time?
What new meals do you enjoy now?
How does your husband like FSU cooking?
Do you eat a balance of Eastern and Western meals?
Please answer to any questions in any way that you think suitable if you can and want to! Thanks.
Bill:
Russian food really wasn't much of a problem for me, although I know expats who couldn't stomach much of it. One of my grandmothers was Swedish and cooked many dishes from Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. Add to that my time in Europe and the many different foods there and Russian food really wasn't any different from what I had eaten in the past. My wife's currently learning North American cooking from my mother and sister. She has also shown them how to do several Russian dishes. In general I tend to eat anything. Mainly I just glad I didn't have to cook dinner.
BelleZeBoob:
1) perhaps buckweat, but not much. It is available here in some stores, but it costs slightly more and is not easily available. Same with salted herrings. Cottage cheese also has a different taste here, I miss Russian tvorog (just a different type of white cottage cheese). The one that I used to buy in Moscow differs from any kinds that I have seen here, including the Russian food stores.
2) Cottage cheese is good instead of tvorog.
3) perhaps some food that is too filling. No changes over time.
4) Lettuce, all kind of green leaf salads, egg whites (unavailable in Russia!), ribs.
6) mostly Western meals.
