English words that FSU women use differently
« on: May 28, 2012, 03:10:08 PM »
When looking through profiles of FSU women, I've noticed some English words used that appear odd in the context.

e.g. women calling themselves 'economist.' Is that actually their profession? I assume they really meant 'accountant.'

I've noticed another one too - 'sporty.' e.g. 'my future man must be sporty.'

What does this mean? Enjoys watching sports? Enjoys playing sports? Stylish?

I'm guessing it's a polite FSU way of saying 'he mustn't be overweight' or 'he must be in good physical shape' (meaning not just that he doesn't drink a great deal but more than that, i.e. he has a toned body).

Apologies if this topic has been discussed before. I did search, promise.

I've noticed a great many FSUW who say they are economists. I've never really known what they do for a living.  I'm going to talk to one tomorrow though.  I'll try to remember to ask her.

I've seen the word "sporty" on many FSUW profiles.  My guess is they mean something like: enjoy playing sports, or possibly exercising.

Another word they seem to use in ways we probably wouldn't is congratulate.  They congratulate us on our birthdays and holidays.  I've now taken to "congratulating" them on these days, just so they don't think I'm ill-mannered. :)

It's a good principle to find out what people from another culture mean when they use English words.  Indians often use the word "homely" to describe a woman in a dating profile.  They mean a good home-maker, cooking, cleaning, etc.  But when we say a woman is homely, we mean she's ugly.

"Sporty"  means athletic, toned.
"Economist" is used  in  the meaning "accountant" very often.

'Economist' usually means that they are forecasting happiness with a rich bloke.

I once communicated with a girl who described herself 'sporty' but during the course of our correspondence she claimed to hate all things to do with fitness. It was around that time I noticed she had quite bad acne.

My all-time favorite - phlegmatic.

At first I thought they were talking about the TB outbreak in EE.  :smokin:

I am sure you know now but in case you don't, phlegmatic refers to one of the four temperaments: sanguine, melancholic, choleric, phlegmatic.

I guess you were lucky no one told you they were choleric!!  :scared0005:

Phlegmatic means that you react too slow.

'Greedy' must be the all-time most popular word they use slightly differently.

Meaning cheap, cheapskate, tight, or skinflint (depending on your version of English).

I agree-- and it is hard to explain why you see it differently.
I recently read of how some words do not translate directly so the emphathis of a sentence is changed. This is particularly so in print translation--where there is no impression of facial expression.

SEXUAL--- used in profiles-- when in fact what is meant is sexy !
When I queried the specific intent of the use in profile--I realised what they were saying.Girls often gratefull to be told !
I noticed  this was common from some areas-- so I wrote to admin--pleased to say-- I do not see it nearly as often now.
