Wits or no wits, if you don't understand the lingo, you will be waaaay out of your  depth.

I don't agree with you the DS. If a guy does a bit of research first, and already has some built in street wiseness about him, he will be much better armed than some naive dumb*ss who speaks the lingo.

As for the two threads, read them both already ;D but thank you :)

You read the RW fever thread? and then posted about a question about hotel prices?
Go on, give being 'nice Andrew' a spin? You know you want to.  Manny

Rich, there is a short thread on how to find and rent an apartment in the FSU here: http://ruadventures.com/forum/index.php?topic=16232.0

Start at the beginning to learn and then after you've learned how, see Vinny's Ukraine suggestions on page 2.

Yes, learn some Russian as you plan to other in a variety of places.

PS...as others have said, Odessa is a wonderful place to visit and for most a horrible place to search for a sincere bride.

Good luck!

I never had any luck with most of Odessa's agency girls.  However I did meet my first Odessa girl from a very popular website. She's a good shit and we're still friends to this day. I met three other agency girls over there and only one was a 'sushi queen'.  So there you go.  If you're looking for a travel companion ask Vinnvinny here, he'd be ohh so happy to have another guy at his table while on a date.  :chuckle:

No I did not post a question about hotel prices, sorry but I have gone through those threads :)
Wits or no wits, if you don't understand the lingo, you will be waaaay out of your  depth.
That is most likely true, but I shall approach it with caution :)

Ha I am not going for a bride, this is more just to get an idea of what I should expect customs wise so when I do go back with the intention of finding a woman that would marry me, I won't be so stupid when it comes to various customs :)

-----

I know this thread is about Odessa but what about Saint Petersburg? I have heard that it is one of the best places to go for a night out and the women are approachable (then again it is apparently like that all over the FSU  )... I would like to go but like I said, I'll be by myself so the likelihood of actually going to clubs to meet women would be less. Which place is the better one to visit?

IMHO if you understand a few words it does boost your self confidence no end. Being streetwise is always good but knowing the language gives you a powerful edge and enables you to deal with many situations.
The first year is the hardest, I heard. Then it was the first two years are the hardest. Now I'm told its the first seven years..............

I'm glad to hear that. I wasn't going to butt into your personal motivations, but unlike the FSUW I don't think marrying and having children is quite the thing for the 20's decade. For various reasons I am really glad I didn't decide to get married and have a kid until I was 32. Now for various reasons I wish I had bypassed the former.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love children (boy and a girl) before I hit 30 but I am also acutely aware of my financial situation as while I have a job, I also have university (3 years left as I am doing a Masters as well) and it is a financial drain >:(

However if I do meet a woman, we fall in love and then have children before I am financially viable (in my opinion not hers, I need at least £20k saved, currently on £5k which will most likely go down once I do my Masters :rolleye0009: ), then I shall take it in my stride as and when it happens, if it happens before I am planning :)

Good planning! I don't know about the before-30 thing, but it depends on you knowing yourself better than anyone else does. I knew I wanted a kid more than anything (and got a great one, my only son!) but I also knew from family history that being a father later than anyone else had would make me a better father.
Absolutely, 100% agree about university before family! What I know about higher education could fit on a match head and I didn't even think I could go back and do it until I stumbled into it...now earning my Bachelor degree unfortunately cuts into a lot of my son's time.

Are there any requirements to be able to purchase a sim? because I know with some places you need to have residency :D

Ahah tbh I'd like to just wander around by myself first, yes I am one of those... I tend to be either a free spirit or one whom has places to go and people to see within X amount of time  cheers for the offer though :)

No, anyone who comes to ukraine can buy a sim card , The only thing you will require is an unlocked phone or purchase a phone when you are here, There are many networks I personally use Djuice because my plan is 2 grivna a day and I can call and talk to anyone on Kievstar or Djuice all day for that 2 grivna , I also use intertelicom I pay 100 grivna a month and can call all house and business numbers for free and other intertelcom phone numbers for free. There are many choices and options for phone networks,

I shall learn Russian then :)

If you're going in a couple of months time then I would suggest that you learn to read the alphabet and download a course called Pimsleur.

Here's a link to a discussion on it and other resources:-

I think the best way to learn a language is the Pimsleur program.  I don't work for them, etc.  The key to this program is it is all-audio - no books - You just listen in your car or on your ipod/mp3 player 30 minutes per day while commuting or jogging, etc.  I would listen to each lesson twice.  If you have time to spend on computer, great.  But if you want efficient learning, this is it.  Also, by audio only, you can't learn to mispronounce the words by reading because you don't read.   It also covers the most useful words first and you learn conversation.

It is possible to find ways of downloading it for free or very cheaply.

I'll check out Pimsleur, thank you :)

As I am now going in September (although Saint Petersburg is still on the cards, perhaps it is better?) is there anything I should check out that is September specific?
