In the mail today, I received a notice that my 2010 Census form would be arriving shortly.

  I read through it.

Then, there at the very bottom, were some items written in different languages.
I quickly recognized Japanese and Arabic writing.  I was about to feed the letter to the
shredder, when I thought, "I wonder..."  So I had a closer look.  And sure enough, there
was Cyrillic writing !!

I probably looked like a fool standing there trying to sound out the words.  But hey, it
brought a smile to my face.  Who woulda thunk it, Russian on a census form.

Some of us are easily amused.   party0031

The Bay area has a fairly decent mass transit system.
There is ДобрО пожАловать! on a sign in many of them.
In addition there is a Russian Yellow pages and of course
a hill in San Francisco called Russian Hill.

Here is a photo of the view from Russian Hill

Chase Bank ATM's offer approximately 16 language options, at least in the Western USA. We love it that Cyrillic is one of them!  Smiley

Cyrillic is not the language, but an alphabet used by a few languages (Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Bulgarian - to name a few)  Undecided

Oh gosh, what a revelation!  bow  I'd have never known without such a tutorial. However, given that you know the difference and I know the difference, are you saying that when we approach the keyboard we could be looking at the Russian, Bulgarian, Belarussian or Ukrainian alphabet?  Cheesy    Shocked   scared0005   rolleye0009   Undecided

Just to clarify for those who don't understand how an ATM works, just as English is written in the Latin alphabet, when Mrs Mendeleyeva uses the Chase ATM keyboard, she likes to use the letters which are in Cyrillic.

Touche' Mendy.

Olga has applied and been accepted for a part-time job as a translator for the census.  It appears the democrats want to make sure all the illegal immigrants from the FSU are counted this year.  The way her supervisor described it is that she will accompany a census taker to areas where Russian people live, explain the process to them and try to elicit their responses.  I'm sure most will be afraid their answers will be used somehow by INS to track them down and deport them so I'm not optimistic about participation.

"Shakespear,"

I bet they fear black Lada's and Zil's showing up with an ambulance in the middle of the night more than a beureacratic census taker.

I always wondered why they didn't just have the post office do it.
They go to most houses anyway. I rarely get letters anymore it's
going the way of the buggy whip.

Jared, upon arrival home today we found ours in the mail. As you saw, it reads "когда вы получите анкету переписи населения 2010 г  информация на сайте 2010census.gov поможет вам правильно её заполнить."

(When you receive the 2010 population questionnaire, the information on the site 2010census.gov will help you complete it correctly.)
