Title: Vacation in Canada?
Post by: Ade on March 24, 2011, 09:22:33 AM
We are considering visiting Canada in the summer; I've always meant to but I've never got around to it.

So, before I start trawling through all the confusing documents on the Canadian consular site, are there any obvious gotchas or possibly show-stoppers involved in an EU guy with a British passport (resident in Norway) taking his Russian wife (also resident in Norway with a residence permit but without a Norwegian passport) on holiday to Canada.

Thanks.

The Canadian Consulate will be looking to see if she can afford her trip and whether she will return. Given that you are married and that she has ties to Norway, I can't see them refusing a temporary resident visa (aka tourist visa).

P.S. Where in Canada do you want to go?

P.S. Where in Canada do you want to go?

Initial thoughts are Quebec, Montreal and Niagara Falls.

Your British passport, if still valid would allow you to enter Canada without a Visa. Your wife if travelling on a Russian one, would need a visa. If she had one from Norway she would not need the visa either But as already stated that should not be a problem, since you both would return to Norway. But you both require a passport to enter Canadan now. (missing those days when a birth certificate was only needed for some travelling  :(.))

For the falls there is a great trail system, one that even allows you down by the river, if you both enjoy that activity. But not found on any map of the falls area. Cliffton Hill can drain your wallet, so I would be selected of which you might do, but a few are worth the time.  tiphat
If you wish any advice on the falls area let me know, I have been there so many times it feels like home.

You may also wish to check out Niagara On the Lake, which is clsoe to the falls. Both of these places have web sites to allow you more information for making any choices for what you would like to do or see.  tiphat

Thanks for the info.

I figured that I could get there with just my passport but was hoping that my wife could bypass some of the usual visa requirements for Russians because she is my wife and/or because she is resident in Norway. I will do some checking but I fear not. I'm also afraid she'll be asked to go for an interview at the nearest Canadian visa department - which is in London! Which would be a total pita itself and would require a visit to the British embassy in Oslo to apply for a visa to visit the Canadian embassy in London! And if that happens we'll find other place to go visit instead. ;)

Niagara falls is nice and there is also a nice wine region there is that's something you're in to.

As for Montreal, I've only ever passed through there on my way to Ontario but I hear old Montreal (district) is quite nice and has a European feel.  Lots to do in Montreal, that's for sure.

I would check with the one in Oslo. It is possible they can recommend a visa to the London office without a visit, based on her residency card. Since Norway does not need a visa to visit Canada, they have no need of a visa office there. But You would still need a visa in that Russian passport, regardless of her PR Card. You are just in the wrong country for Visa issuing.  :chuckle:

Nab - Niagara On the Lake is the wine region, about 20 minutes by car east of the falls, where the Niagara river empties into Lake Ontario. A nice drive if you take the river road between the two places.  :)

Ade:
It seems Canada now has a standard form for "visas" so likely your wife can download it fill it all in prepay for it and send off her documents and passport for the visa and have everything returned directly to her via your prepaid courier route.  We have been going over this with Lora's parents in Ukraine and there they no longer even need to visit Kiev, merely prepare and forward all the documents and prepaid fee receipt to the Embassy.  I expect it will be very similier for your wife.  Now just sit back and do the paperwork!

Wes in Toronto.

 Try this site..

 http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp

There should be a telephone number you can call to ask further info on what is required in simple words from a real live french canadian! It'll give you a heads up for the Quebec  :sick0012: portion of your holiday.
