Is Manny's first TR not on another forum?

Manny never wrote a TR as such.

OK.  I was counting you in my handful of validated success stories using the meet in other country first strategy Manny.  ;D

Anyone remembers Gorky Guy from the previous forum? IIRC, he has first met his wife in Prague...  :-\

Gorky was also here early days: http://ruadventures.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=53

Yeah, why writing a trip report that folks can read for free?  :chuckle:

He wrote a book instead  :reading:  :money:

If he were a 20 years older American, probably. Different generation and mindset. Much potential for disaster.

In his case, probably not.

They got to know each other pretty naturally (as much as one can over Skype). He appears well socialised with a sensible outlook. They are similar in age, both modern European mentality from what we can tell.

Assuming her folks know where she is going, they will have taken care of that I reckon. When my [now] wife and I were first in France and Holland, she had a few thousand dollars (yes, it was still dollars back then - now more likely Euros) that her Dad had given her just in case she had to get herself out of shit street fast.

I think they are doing what a bunch of Facebook generation folks do every day now.

OK - call me old school.

But when a neophyte comes to the forum and his first post is about how he's going to meet a Russian babe in Thailand, a red light goes off somewhere in my head.

We've seen that train wreck play out before MANY times in the past.

Nah, there's no potential train wreck here.  I used to live in SE Asia so my side is all cool.  I have friends all over Thailand so I'll enjoy myself whatever.  If she wants out I'll make sure she's okay.  It costs maybe 30 USD a day to live a beach life there.  I'm happy to be a gent and help her out.

If she just wants to be friends and enjoy a holiday as such, I'm fine with that and I'll introduce her to people so she doesn't feel uncomfortable being stuck with me.

If I had fallen in love with a collection of pixels and gone somewhere with the express intention of nuptials, THAT would be a recipe for disaster, heartbreak, discomfort.  This is a low pressure gig that gives easy ways out for all concerned.

I might be wrong, but I read his English as born and bred British Asian. Those blokes use the word "gig" somewhat too.

My grandmother thinks that terming black guys as 'gentlemen of colour' is the most cutting-edge of PC.  Bless you, default-coloured geriatric lady.  La sproglette is my niece.  Chicks dig pics of guys with babies, natch.

Not to say I'm here to pick up more exotic dates.

Well your Employment Contract sure covers all bases doesn't it ...

It wouldn't work. I'm not the type of bloke who would book 2 rooms or sleep in a beach hut, they'd work that out quickly I'm sure.

Me: 31, reasonably successful IT sales consultant from London.

Would you happen to know of a restaurant that has private/semi private rooms for say 15 people?

Don't you think you'd be better served going to her home city

I took my girl for a first date to Stalingrad!........ in December!!!

Shakey's just jealous ur not taking him, something about Ladyboys I heard....

 BTW, I missed the show.

PS, I'll bet a beer you'll be nailing her to the sheets within 24 hours of meeting.

Totally agree with leslied's two points - totally agree.  First night will be in Phuket and I'm booking two rooms.  Thereafter it will be beach hut things going down the coast so I'll make sure to offer to book her a separate boudoir as we go.

I don't want to disagree on this point, but there is another option to consider. If you ask her to make that call, you're putting her in the "Oh, God, will he think I'm a slut if I say okay to one room?" position--even if she *is*, in fact, DTF.  Generally speaking, a lady who agrees to accompany you on a trip to a tropical location over a period of weeks is probably going to think it odd if you *didn't* try to bang her.  Quite possibly insulted, even.  :)  So my view would be to book as if you are a couple, and if you like, mention the accommodations casually, and if she objects, change them, and if she remains silent on it, then you know.

An older male friend of mine once gave me advice to book 2 rooms in a similar situation w/a lady with whom I knew (although not yet then in the "biblical" sense), and give her some long, flowery speech about how I didn't want to "ruin" what could be, between us, yada-yada.  I remember replying something to the effect of "So...you're saying that my strategy should be to try to convince her that I'm gay?"

Always remember, you are the man.  Not her, you.  You are the hunter, therefore, you must press forward, although the advantage is that you get to choose the terrain.  The last thing a woman wants is some trembling boy.

And before anyone starts on "chivalry", blah-blah, first, it's not the 1600s any more, and not every woman is a chaste virgin looking only for a sincere fellow to have lunch with, discussing the merits of silk flower arranging, and whether rainbows are more awesome than fluffy kittens.  And even if it *were* still the 1600s, then I say "Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady!  To the Battlements!"

If she's greenlighting you, you'll know.  If she's giving your Heisman (stiff-arm) you will know that, too.  I'm not saying start humping her leg on the way in from the airport, just have a little savoir faire, about the situation....

I remember in boot camp, my D.I. teaching me "Always choose the "hard" right instead of the "easy" wrong."

Someday, you should write a book: "Everything I Ever Needed to Know About Romance, I Learned in USMC Boot Camp".

Do you think it would be a good idea for Scampo to give the lady say $2500 in cash the moment she gets off the airplane - just to hold in case she decides she wants to get away from him but doesn't have the resources herself to do so?  She of course will be expected to return the money to him before she goes home if she doesn't need it.

No, that sounds weirdly paranoid.  What, he's betting her $2500 that she doesn't like him?

However, maybe I'm being naive about cultural differences here but this is a fairly sophisticated city girl from downtown in what, let's face it, is not a small village...a divorcee with a fairly senior white collar job and top-quartile earnings...I hardly feel like I'm subjugating an innocent young thing.

That's b/c you're not....

Aha. I'm Anglo Saxon English.

That's the PC term for 'white'.  :chuckle:

I will sometimes refer to myself as an "Anglo Saxon of Ancient Lineage", b/c it sounds better than "Pure White Trash, All the Way Back."  :chuckle:

And puppies, no confusion with puppies as to who's kid :)

The pièce de résistance I have found is holding a baby and a puppy.

I don't rely on kids or puppies, but every single scar I have was acquired in the course of saving kittens from burning buildings, on  multiple occasions.  ;D
