All Things Russian>Some Questions

All Things Russian.

I would be interested in getting some feedback from members on this site with their level of
experience with Russia. There are some very experienced folks here as well as newbies.

I read a very interesting post by Edward (Russian Translator and RW marriage guru on this site)
had to learn the Russian familial courtship procedures to win his wife.

I would be most interested in the Folks that have extensive experience with Russia so
will ask some questions.

1. How long have you been married to a RW?

2. Did you have any prior experience with Russia before you went out to find your RW Wife?

3. How many trips did it take to finally get married?

4. How many trips have you made to go back to Russia to see family and trips that they have come to see you?

5. How many children do you now have and do they also speak Russian? Age of children?

6. How many years went by before you had a child with your wife?

7. How many Russian Friends and Family Members do you now have in your extended Russian Circle?

This is a start and hope I get some responses from the Oldies but Goodies here.

How about answering those questions yourself, for a good start?  :)
Men are like Bluetooth: he is connected to you when you are nearby, but searches for other devices when you are away.
Women are like Wi-Fi: she sees all available devices, but connects to the strongest one.

1. Seven years.

2. I was a regular in the FSU seven years before I met her. Business and pleasure. I first visited the region in 1998 as a tourist.

3. Trips to meet her, about a dozen. Some me there, some her here, some in a third country.

4. She visits once a year. Occasionally twice. I sometimes go. Her folks have been here too.

5. Our daughter is almost five. She is bi-lingual. She cannot write in Cyrillic yet, but she will. I also have a son who is nine, he can count and do some pleasantries in Russian, but he isn't enthusiastic about learning it as he sees no need. I would rather he learned, as we have a free resident Russian teacher, and it will open doors for him in the future. But like me, he is stubborn by nature and wont be forced into anything. As a curious aside, I am now teaching them both counting in German. And they are both lapping it up. Go figure......

6. We married in 2006. Our daughter was born in 2009.

7. We have Russian speaking friends in the UK and several countries as well as Russia. As with Sparky, some we socialise with locally, some we meet infrequently as they are not local. I had Russian friends before I met my wife that I still see from time to time.

Russian familial courtship procedures

I recall after my [now] wife had agreed to marry me, I still had to ask her Dad - to be proper. A formality really, and not a great shock to him.  :chuckle:  But people place too much emphasis on some of that stuff in my opinion. I can't speak for Ed, as his wife isn't from one of the usual haunts, and having met her, she is quite a reserved lady. I couldn't say what Russian familial courtship procedures might have been in place where she is from, back when he met her, but I doubt they were too onerous. I reckon he wasn't at much risk of going home with a pumpkin.

Yes i did the same it was more for respect to her Mom than to gain the right answer, the question that came back since we had been dating (about 7 trips in 7 months) was when / where and what took me so long, time she told me flys fast  :chuckle:

7. How many Russian Friends and Family Members do you now have in your extended Russian Circle?

 1. I still refuse to say that word, but its been 3.5 years

 2. None.

 3. I took 8 trips in total. I bounced around Ukraine mostly, did 3 trips to revisit girls I had met/dated over the years. Flew off to Russia once to meet a girl, and I flew a girl in from Uzbekistan while I was in Russia, she's the one I'm with today.

4. My final trip to the FSU was to get all things legalized so she could come live with me in Canada. So far no visits there, or any visits from her family here.  The mom has been trying, and like everything in Uzbekistan its layered in problems. A simple visitor visa app has taken months, and has recently been lost in by the now fired courier company that was required to handle passports leaving Uzbekistan. Yes that's right, Pony Express lost/forged some things I'm told and she has to start again. Love the Soviet way.
I have zero plans to return, there once was talk of a 3rd country visit with her family, and Odessa was mentioned by her. I jumped and said F'yeah lets do it, I can visit my friends there! ....... short pause while I realized I spoke too soon, that plan died on the spot with the middle finger aimed my way.  :(

5. None. She has one 10yo, speaks less Russian every week, even when mom speaks in Russian to her, she usually replies in English.

6.  :snivel:   :hidechair:

7. She has no real interest in meeting any Russian's. She told me she moved away from Russian life, not to find it on the other side of the world. I'm ok with it.
