Title: Photos from a village in Belarus
Post by: Larry on June 02, 2014, 08:34:47 AM
The EnglishRussia photoblog has published a series of photographs of life in a village in Belarus:

http://englishrussia.com/2014/05/31/life-in-belarus-village/

Here are a few but there are lots more at the link above.  I should warn you - one photo is not worksafe if you work in the US.  It shows some people getting out of the lake after taking a dip in winter (they are nekkid). So if you're at work here be very careful as you approach the last photo on the first page.  I have a feeling that many of the Europeans find it hard to believe the laws/atmosphere here.  But a friend of mine working at a legal office was called on the carpet and ordered to remove from his desk a photo of himself and his wife at the beach because his wife was in a bikini.  One of the womyn there had complained and the office was afraid of being accused of allowing a hostile environment in the workplace.

Are they violating that FSU "rule" against allowing an empty bottle to stay on the table?  I can't really tell but it seems like at least one of those bottles is empty.

Cabbages.  Lots and lots of cabbages:

Very interesting - I wonder how many people live in such villages?  And, do the younger people tend to go to the city, and then stay there once they graduate?

This is a good question that I hope people with more experience in-country will answer.

In my very limited experience with girls who were raised in villages and very small towns in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, many of them move to large cities in order to get a good job and find a husband.  That would often be Kiev in Ukraine, Minsk in Belarus, and any of a number of large cities in Russia, especially Moscow - or just as likely the nearest large city to them.

A few of these girls had qualities that I liked a lot.  Of course, my sample size is so tiny that I would hesitate to make a generalization about village girls vs. urban girls.

My wife has friends and distant family that live in "villages" outside Odessa. The word "village" as used by my wife and her friends has multiple meanings. You have the older rural type villages seen in Larry's pictures and there are newer developments with paved roads and cookie cutter homes currently being  built. Both are referred to as villages.

Many of the young people do migrate to the city centers for work, education, and excitement. Some stay in the villages and work. Some eventually move back to the villages as housing there is less expensive.
