Too bad...
Just goes to show that we never know when our time might be up.

Somewhat ironic about Southwest which has a long track record without any incidents (compared to Allegiant Airlines). The law of averages eventually catch up to you. :-\

I suppose that's true. I did hear that Southwest had suffered a similar engine issue a few years back, but yeah, generally speaking, they're pretty clean. I still find it amazing that we don't see more commercial aviation incidents than we do, considering the 30,000 some flights flown daily all around the world.

Southwest had a similiar accident to this one in 2016 with a 737. There were no fatalities.
Having noted the 737 has many variants and the plane is considered safe. While an older design (1967) it is still being built today.

One cool cookie of a pilot! A transcript of the cockpit - control after the loss of engine.
Evidently the passenger only was partially sucked out, but died of a heartache heartattack.
Have to love spelling correct . . .

Preliminary examinations appear to point to a fan blade breaking off.
In August 2016, Southwest Airlines Flight 3472, another Boeing 737-700, also suffered an uncontained failure of its left engine that ripped off its front cowling. In this case, shrapnel also pierced the fuselage causing decompression forcing the flight to make an emergency landing Pensacola, Florida.

I guess people now are going to avoid the seats near the wing? :-\
