As some of you may have noticed, we have had some downtime and issues with our hosting speed in recent months.
Our current host isn't what they once were since an ownership change, and its time to move again.
We will sometime over the next few days be moving RUA to a new host (the one GoGabber.com is on - that site was test pilot before we moved RUA). This will involve the site being down for a short while until the nameservers propagate the change where you are.
I'll update the topic when I know more details. Any questions, please ask.

Is Mrs. Manny tying red blue and white ribbons :RUS: on the new server - or will it be blue and yellow ? :uaflag:

New server is actually in the UK. :GOUK:
Most of the work is done, archives are over, just waiting on Herrie to have some free time to do the final bits and we can flick the domain. Hopefully, this will be sometime this week.
It is worth noting that when it happens, you will see "old" RUA has a "maintenance" message up. To hasten your computer to recognise the new server and route to that instead, using Ctrl + Alt to refresh may help. As may using a browser you don't normally use with no stored history.
Sporadic behaviour might be expected for 24 hours or so depending where you are in the world.
-
Is is possible on the new server to limit the number of threads regarding the current FSU political situation to say around 10? I do hope so, it's getting silly now .... :(

Might have some time later today or tomorrow to check things on the new server.

Looks like we are here. If you can see this, give me a holler. :coffeeread:
-
I can but it's still at the temp addy. Regular link is still MIA
-
Yes, I am not sure how long that takes to catch up. Can be up to 48 hours depending where you are.
-
See it on the temp addy.
-
I see it on the temp also, but seems a lot faster, so all good.
-
On the temporary address. Original is MIA

Having difficulty with domain settings, a records, nameservers and related stuff. :'(
Waiting on whoever I can reach first to help out. :coffeeread:
I shouldn't be let loose with the controls really............ :-X
-
I am advised it is all fixed now.
Might take until the morning to work properly everywhere.

I admit, I know little of these things, But I do know a guy who does this sort of thing,
is it normal to have so many issues. He does most of his in a matter of minutes,
and sorts out small problem's very quickly.
-
Can someone tell me if they are logging in OK via the normal domain please?
Trev, server swaps can take a while to work everywhere. The delay was cause by me not knowing nameserver IP's were different to server IP's. You learn something every day......
-
I logged in via normal links.
Was down most of day my time, so maybe others have not tried yet. all should be home from work soon :)
-
I just optimized the DB, it is working right for me now.
-
I just clicked on posts unread, since last visit,
which was an hour ago and I got, a bunch as old as the 4th

That is pretty normal as I have been optimising the database, removing old logs and other random maintenance stuff.
I think I am on top of it now.
Can anyone the other side of the pond tell if me if the forum feels faster, slower or the same as before?
-
Seems faster, but honestly that could be the power of suggestion.
-
I am now on the normal site and it seems about the same, perhaps a tiny bit quicker. I did notice while on the temp server, I was missing some of the threads (I know there were additional posts that were no longer there that I had previously seen) and now that I am back on the normal one, they did not return. Almost as if the server rolled back to a previous time before the posts? FYI
-
All is well - but I suspect some postings are lost.
In the in between time I posted onto this thread and the Ukraine riot threads both posting are not present, and I did not insult Anteros.
Not great loss (insulting Anteros) but a I guess a few other posts disappeared.

Its possible we lost about an hour or so this morning. Herrie and I agreed "early morning" to meet on Skype. I came on about 8.30am, and he had sent me a bunch of messages about 6.30am saying he had done it all at his end. :o
Early morning in Europe and here on the island mean two different things I think.

We are on a way better ho$t than before. It is in the UK so increased speed versus the time lag to the US against the shitty host we had before should at least balance out.
The host we have now, you pick up a phone and talk to a guy called Rory, and a few moments later it is fixed. The one we had before you opened a ticket and someone called Abdul or Gomez replied after two days with "we are looking at this with most urgency, and we are of the hoping to have you the answer soon" - and then we would go offline for six hours. :chuckle:

Compliments to Manny, Herrie and Rory. tiphat
Have a cold one or warm one.

Petit Chablis now! ;D
Actually, Rory @Vidahost (https://www.vidahost.com/) is da man! I spoke to four tech support people (one of whom was an RW strangely enough) on this before Rory nailed it this evening and talked me through the fix. I was tearing my hair out with the site down all day before I spoke to him.
The host imported us from the old server a few days ago - no easy task because our image files are so large - and Herrie took care of the database update and real-time swap over details this morning.
All I had to do was sort out the nameservers, A records, DNS glue and the easy stuff. Which I then promptly broke. :chuckle:
A guy from GoDaddy chimed in with a temporary dirty fast fix [that worked] early evening before Rory did his stuff - gotta love that "can do" American service ethic. Even though GoDaddy are a totally crap host, they are a good registrar and they have some really good tech guys. That bloke made me feel all warm and fuzzy even before he had fixed it.
But it looks like we are here and pretty much together. Please mention any gremlins you find on the topic here so I can take a peek at them.
-
Good customer service can not be understated. Cheers!

I so love that American "can do" attitude........... we need some of that over here. Over here it is all "Well, I will have a look". In the US it is more like "Yes, we will get that fixed up for you. You will be up and running in no time"
That is a bit of America I really do like!

I was about to write, it is much faster, when it froze up solid, would not load page. Had to click out of browser, the come back on.
When going from page to page, seems much quicker.

Bloody hell i choose the exact day you did the change to travel back from the land of "red" (:) sitting on a layover of 6 hours with no RUA you get to realise how bloody boring FaceBook really is :coffeeread:

You only had to look on Twitter or GG for the temporary link. :chuckle:
-
A ton of attachments are still missing, I'm working on that. Seems like FTP clients are limited to 10.000 files in a folder and that was reached in 2009 already, so still need almost 5 years of attachments to move across ;)

Site is faster, yet it has locked up several times, going from page to page, when this happens, only seems to work, if exit our and re-enter.
-
Seems I've lost the spell check feature. Site is faster though

I was thinking of the members who don't have English as a first language. :innocent: :innocent:
Will it return?

Probably, but you never can be sure :) I think Herrie will sort it sometime soon.

Locked out all day !!
Refused to log me in. Said my password was incorrect. When I tried to update my password - the session timed out :GRRRR:
Tonight I access the temporary site and straight in...
-
I'm sticking one of my boxes into Colo soon hopefully - RUA is welcome to use it maybe as a failover server or full time if there's capacity, free of course.
It's a Sun X4450, 4 x 4 core 2.3gig Xeons, 128gb ram, 8 x 146gb SAS disks, will be sliced up into VPS's for automated Algo trading which I feel is a disaster waiting to happen but I've got to give it a go.
Bit old-tech by todays standards, but still a meaty bit of kit. We got early access to IBM POWER8, or PowerVC as it seems to be now where I'm at now, I want one!

Clear your cookies and use Chrome if you don't already.

I don't see why that would have disappeared. But if you use Chrome, it has it built in.
I'll see if Herrie can find it. He has fixed our images. All 46000 of them. :o
Ste, that is Double Dutch to me. As Herrie is Dutch, he can comment on if that is handy. Ta.

Not a bad idea at all Manny.

It's an hour ahead of London...perhaps Herrie's time? :)
I noticed it yesterday. It used to be EST (one hour ahead of me) and now it is 7 hours up. It makes sense to have it on UK time though (+6) as it is Manny's site (or even GMT)
