Very neat... I will add it to the list of places to visit.

Has anyone been there?

Note:  the movie "Ostrov" (The Island) is set in Karelia:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0851577/

A great movie IMHO.

There are other threads on RUA regarding Karelia.

As I recall earlier this year on Lake Onega a bunch of children died because the adults were not careful.

The disaster was on lake Syamozero.

The 4 tour guides/boats persons were arrested for non compliance with safety regulations.

Their trial is expected to be held early into 2017..

Thanks, I assume this lake is part of the region and is part of the watershed of Onega/Karelia?

There is at least one thread about Karelia on RUA, might be interesting to bring it back to life.
