This is a feature about what one can find in the Russian "want ads." One of the most popular is a Live Journal segment similar to Craigs List. You can find everything from dogs to cats to beds to kitchenware to clothing to computers to......

As this offers a unique view into everyday life in the FSU, we'll feature some of the most interesting from time to time.

Старый, но рабочий холодильник с морозильником. Все работает, единственное - к нему нужен трансформатор на 127 вольт, которого у меня нет. Жить у меня будет только вечера воскресения. Потом летит с балкона.

"Old, but working fridge with freezer. Everything works, the only - thing it needs is a transformer for 127 volts, which I do not have. I will keep it only until the evening on Sunday. Then it takes a flight off the balcony."

может кому нужен диван на дачу или еще куда.. заберите пожалуйста...длина 140 ширина 110.. в разложенном виде соответственно 140 на 200.. забрать желательно сегодня завтра чем скорее тем лучше.

Mendeleyev note:
This is how 70-80% of beds work in the FSU. A sofa (диван "di-vahn") by day, bed by night. See the little handle at bottom centre? Pull it out and the sofa easily folds into a bed for 1-2 persons. Lift up the bottom and it will reveal a shelf where pillows and blankets are stored out of sight.

Mendeleyev note:
Most Russian homes don't have closets except for a hallway closet for coats. The word for closet or shelf or wardrobe most generally is Шкаф "SHKAF" which I put the phonetic in caps because it's a strong word, the whole sound accented.

Instead of built-in closets (in Europe a built-in closet is technically another room and in some locales a house is taxed by number of rooms), so Russian homes use large wardrobes like these instead of closets. These photos show the exterior view and also how it looks inside.

Note:
You'll find one of these in a vast majority of Russian/Ukrainian homes. It is usually located in the largest bedroom (which also serves as living room by day and dining room in evening) and is where Mama stores all of her nice dishes, etc.

There is a famous one called "Sperma" (I am guessing it is spelled "спермы") This is a well-known face cream. And yes, the English "sperm" is the same as the Russian "sperm". It's the same word. You are not confused.

I don't know what the Russian cream is actually made from. We can safely assume it is not real sperm. That product is believed to have health giving properties though, for reasons not totally unconnected with its name.

Take from that what information you will.

Webster offers confusing definitions for the two. Regarding cream: Etymology: Middle English creime, creme, from Anglo-French creme, cresme, from Late Latin cramum, of Celtic origin; akin to Welsh cramen scab, crust.

Russians pronounce it as "krim" like the French do creme'. But we could all be wrong.

I have noticed that none of the ads for the furntiture, actually state what wood, or manufactuer made it. Is that becuse most would recognize it, as it would be a common type there for the type of wood, and manufactuer. 8)

Три подвески на дуге, телефонная трубка и погремушки на столике, при нажатии на кнопки громовым голосом орет песенку Винни-Пуха. В нормальном состоянии, без дефектов (на фото впереди след от наклейки, отмою).

Забирать сегодня после 19, завтра до 11 и после 19, послезавтра в любое время. Желательно поскорее, занимают много места))

Most quality items will mention those things. Many of the older things we've seen so far are from the Soviet period and everyone knows it was generally crap.

Now that isn't true for all things of course. Most of that Soviet period furniture was mass produced and low quality so sellers don't even bother with the description of materials and brand.
