Добро пожаловать! (Welcome!) to the "Honey City" of Ukraine. Melitopol is a lovely city of the Zaporizhia Oblast in southeastern Ukraine. It is situated on the Molochna River that flows through the eastern edge of the city and into the Molochnyi Liman, which eventually joins the Sea of Azov. The city was formerly named Kyzyl-Yar until 1816, and Novoalexandrovka until 1842.

Generally, the Russian language is spoken in the city as is Ukrainian. The estimated population is around 158,700.

The Melitopol railroad station serves as a transit point for passengers going from Moscow to the Crimea and back. The city is also called the "gateway to the Crimea" and while there is a small airport it is not used for passenger service. The city has two bus stations: the new intercity station and the old station of local buses. Two highways lead through Melitopol: The M14 Odesa-Novoazovsk Highway and the M26 Kharkov-Simferopol National Highway. At this writing, the marshrutkas (minivans) are the sole kind of the city's public transport. They run 34 routes, working from 5:00 a.m. till 12:30 a.m.

At the outset of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) the city was strategically important due to its location. The Red Army was not ready for the war and had to retreat and the Nazis occupied Melitopol on October 6, 1941. The city was important because Melitopol was also a regional manufacturing center. Today food products, consumer goods, and automobile engines are produced there.

From the sunflowers above you can understand how Melitopol is nicknamed as "The Honey City." This is one of the most productive agricultural areas of Ukraine. In addition to honey the sunflowers produce seeds and oil. Melitopol is located in a steppe zone, favorable for growing various fruits and vegetables.

Melitopol has 38 monuments, memorials and statues registered of which one is the statue of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, the famous hetman of Ukraine. His images are printed on Ukrainian 5 hryvnia's banknotes.

How to get there:

By train: Melitopol has a newly renovated railway station with connections to and from the majority of Ukrainian cities. The trains are Kharkov-Feodosia, Dnipropetrovsk-Yevpatoria, Moscow-Yevpatoria, Kiev-Kerch and others. Check train schedules here.

By car or bus : The roads to Melitopol is quite convenient. There are a lot of buses coming to Melitopol (Malitopol-Kramatorsk, Kirilovka-Zaporizhzhya, Melitopol –Zaporizhzhya, Odesa-Donetsk etc.)
