Lvov (Ukrainian:  Львів; Russian: Львов)

Lvov (Ukrainian:  Львів, L’viv [ljviw], Latin: Leopolis; Polish: ; German: Lemberg; Lithuanian: Lvovas; Russian: Львов, L'vov)  is a major city in western Ukraine. It is regarded as one of the main cultural centres of Ukraine. In 2001, it had 725,000 inhabitants, of whom 88 per cent were Ukrainians, 9 per cent Russians (down from 16 percent in 1989) and 1 per cent Poles.[1] A further 200,000 people commuted daily from suburbs.

Lvov is a "city of churches."

Lvov, Lwow, Lvov, Lemberg, Leopolis... it's a city of many faces. Don't expect the pristine perfection of Prague, but nor the millions of tourists for that matter. What you can expect is a dash of magic, as Lvov can hold its own with the most beautiful of Europe's cities. This dreamy metropolis has been both the capital of Habsburg Galicia, and a key city in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Lvov city hall.

Lvov was an important centre for sport in Central Europe and it is regarded as the cradle of Polish football. The first known official goal in a football match in Poland was scored there on 14 July 1894 during the Lvov-Kraków game. The goal was scored by Włodzimierz Chomicki, who represented the team of Lvov. In 1904 Kazimierz Hemerling from Lvov published the first translation into Polish of the rules of football; another native of Lvov, Stanisław Polakiewicz, became the first officially recognised Polish referee in 1911, the year in which the first Polish Football Federation was founded in Lvov.

Rail station.

Lvov University is one of the oldest in Central Europe. Its was founded as a Jesuit school in 1608. Its prestige greatly increased through the work of philosopher Kazimierz Twardowski (1866–1938), one of the founders of the Lwów-Warsaw School of Logic.

St George Cathedral.

Lvov has an active musical and cultural life. Apart from the Lvov Opera it has a Symphony Orchestra, the Trembita Chorus. Lvov has one of the most prominent conservatories and music colleges in Ukraine, and also has a factory for the manufacture of stringed musical instruments. Lvov has been the home of numerous composers such as Mozart's son Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart, Stanislav Liudkevych, Filaret and Mykola Kolessa.

Old Polish name of city, antique tiles.

Lvov radio stations:

"Radio Lux" http://radiotime.com/WebTuner.aspx?StationId=6081&

  "Skrinya Radio" http://sradio.tv/stream/1728.m3u

Keep in mind that Lvov was part of Poland a lot longer than Ukraine.  As such there are a lot of Polish language media, signs, language, etc, in Lvov.  The very first radio stations in Lvov were Polish language.

Lvov Webcams and videos:

Nice video of the city here.

Lvov is a city of churches and museums.

Here is a guide to the major church groups:
- The Orthodox Church is basically divided into 3 groups: Those governed by the Moscow Patriarch and two Ukrainian Orthodox groups have their own Patriarchs in Kiev.

- The Uniate Church (Orthodox in belief and practice but Roman Catholic in government.) Known officially as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the head Archbishop is headquarted in Lvov for all Ukraine.

- Roman Catholic Church.  As Lvov was a Polish city for generations, the Roman Catholic Church is very strong here.

- Armenian Catholic Church, which is also in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, has it's Archbishop in Lvov.

I will be flying into Lvov for a couple of days then stay in Ternopil. Any good places to eat or recommendations for hotels?

Does anyone know the approximate travel time from the city center to the airport on a Monday morning?

I seem to recall its only about 5 - 7 miles, so 30 to 40 minutes, although its 2 or 3 years since I last did it.

A bus sign in L'viv

This is overlooking the train station from a 4 or 5 story shopping center across the street.

Another view of St. George - it is an amazing piece of architecture from the "Baroque period"

Can anyone share some useful info re. Lvov airport, please?

E.g. how many terminals are there? Can't load the map... http://lwo.aero/en/infrastructure/map/

To which terminal the flights from Russia are arriving? To which terminal the flights to Warsaw are leaving? Seems it's terminal A, right? http://lwo.aero/en/passengers/registration/

Are there separate check-in counters for business- and economy-class passengers?

Is there a business-lounge for the departing passengers - and if yes, is it located in the "main" building, or somehow aside?

Cafes, toilets, smoking lounges - before and after security check?

Anyone tried http://lwo.aero/en/infrastructure/vip-service/ - it it worth 252 Hrivnas, or just a waste of money?

Olga Mouse,

I iimagine Chris and AvHdB will see this thread and chime in. They've flown out of there much more often than I have.  But just in case:

I think there is only one terminal. It's a small place. There isn't much in the way of amenities there.  I don't think there is a business lounge.  I didn't see a cafe either.  There are toilets before the security area.  There may have been some also on the other side, after the security check, but I didn't notice them.

Thanks Larry!

The description you gave sounds a bit like "back to the USSR" to me  :D ...

I thought they've renovated the airport a bit before the last summer's football championship, no?  :chuckle:

Olga, I have flown in and out a few times, but it was before Euro 2012 so I don't know if they have done the place up in the meantime.

So prior to 2012 it was a pretty basic airport, no lounges of any kind really, toilets that I used were disgusting and across the carpark (not inside the terminal) although they may have some internally, but I don't recall any.

One terminal, fairly basic and bugger all to do whilst waiting. However, like I said, it may, have been refurbished this last year or so.

Hm... so the building with grey roof, and 4 air bridges, is a new one, then?

Olga, The new terminal is quite good (efficient) the old one though was amusing and a pain the ass. Everything now is modern but when I was last there after E U R O 2012 half was mothballed.

As to monthballs, they aren't always bad - at least in winter Russian women can arrive to Lvov safely in their fur coats  :chuckle:

About 50 miles from L'viv (an hours drive) is Olesko Castle.

Here is the Wikipedia link.
