The Russian City of Perm:

To begin the journey to Perm we'll take the scenic route--via the Trans Siberian Railway from Moscow.  To get an idea of the trip we'll first check the map:

From Wikipedia:  Perm (Пермь) is a city and administrative center of Perm Krai, Russia. It is situated on the banks of the Kama River, in European part of Russia near the Ural Mountains.  Perm is one of the largest cities in Russia, thirteenth most populous, with 990,200 (2007 est.)[1] inhabitants, down from 1,001,653 recorded in 2002 Census and 1,090,944 recorded in 1989 Census. The city is served by Bolshoye Savino Airport but also hosts Bakharevka air base.  The word "Perm" is 'Komi in origin. "Parma" is translated from Komi-Permyak language as a hilly place, covered with woods.  In geology, the Permian period takes its name from the region.

The city of Perm was formerly known as and is located in eastern European Russia on the Kama River. It is the capital of Perm Oblast. Located in a region rich in mineral resources, the city is an important industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include chemicals, agricultural machinery, and metal products.

Perm's new train station.

Perm is the seat of a university and several professional and technical colleges. The site of the city was settled in ancient times. In 1568 Russian traders established the town of Yegoshikha here, and in 1780 the community achieved city status as Perm and was made a district capital. Perm was merged with Molotovo in 1938, and the name Molotov was adopted two years later. In 1957 the name Perm' was readopted.

The city of Perm is a major center of heavy industry, primarily engineering, which manufactures processing and production equipment for the metallurgical, mining, and forest industries as well as electrical components, aircraft engines, machine tools and river ships. Perm is also famous for its musical and theatrical traditions.

I really like Perm. Nice city, decent size, good cafés and restaurants. I was surprised to read, however, that it was ranked the third most dangerous city in Russia in terms of crime (see: http://runewsweek.ru/theme/?tid=171&rid=2626). Then again, my wife's city also made the top-ten.
