From Ufa to Omsk

Russia is the largest country on earth.  Crossing over from the European continent into Asia we continue to travel East. Just above the border of Kazakhstan we travel through some of the most incredible scenery one could imagine.

Omsk is a major rail hub for the Trans Siberian Railway.  Here is a directory of Omsk to other cities: http://www.transsib.ru/Eng/large-orig.htm

Ah, while the scenery is nice, we are driving thru one of the most polluted areas in the world due to several (previously unreported by the CCCP) nuclear accidents at the Mayak power station, long before Chernobyl.

The major highway M51 is a combination of modern paved highway with large sections suddenly converting to gravel for hours, then reverting to pavement.  If you have to ask about rest areas, motels, clean restrooms, well you should have taken the train!

We're 1100 Km (692 miles) from Ufa to Omsk so settle in for a long ride!

Welcome to Omsk

During the 2+ year Russian Civil War, the White forces came close to ruling Russia from Siberia to the East while the Communists would have ruled Western Russia.  The Red Army outfought the White forces (which included USA, Canadian and British forces) and the whole of Russia fell to the Bolsheviks. Omsk was the capital of "White Russia" during part of the War years.

Omsk was founded in 1716 as a fortress at the junction point of channels of the Irtysh and the Om rivers by Colonel Ivan Bookhgoltz, this historic fact initiated developing one of the oldest cities in Siberia. At the second part of the 18th century the fortress became the largest fortification at the East of the country.
