From its situation at the southern terminus of the navigable course of the Dnieper river, and equally advantageous positioning on the crossway from Muscovy to Black Sea, it acquired a great commercial importance early on, and by 1655, it was a wealthy Cossack town. In 1625, at Lake Kurukove in Kremenchuk, the Treaty of Kurukove was signed between the Cossacks and the Poles.

More than 90% of the city's buildings were leveled over the course of the war, and most of Kremenchuk's once substantial Jewish population was wiped out. Kremenchuk/Kremenchug, continued:

So it the name "Kremenchuk" or  "Kremenchug?

Well there is a simple answer so here goes:

It's a language explanation, because Кременчук (Kremenchuk) is the Ukrainian spelling and Кременчуг (Kremenchug) is the Russian spelling.  That is the reason why you may hear differences in how this city is pronounced.

Just across the Dnieper River from Kremenchug is the city of Chigirin, the home of Bogdan Chmelnitskiy, Get'man (ruler) of Ukraine. Note his 'septer' called a bulava. My step-son gave me a big one when we were married to show that I was head of the household, the king of the castle.
