We've just this week enjoyed watching "The Edge" which is a 2010 Russian release, set however just after the War. It isn't on youtube right now.

A movie I really enjoyed was "Stilegi" a musical about 1950's Russia where a group of teens dress exotically when everyone was expected to conform. It is not too difficult to follow even if you don't know Russian. I usually don't like musicals but this one was a good comedy/drama.

Soviet life in media
« Reply #103 on: December 31, 2011, 09:48:59 PM »
Lately it seems that we've been watching films dealing with the early Soviet era and I'm keen to trace the evolution in attitudes regarding role of the Soviet system in Russian life. It's not a surprise that prior to the late 80s that the Soviet view would be seen as the moral and just option while those who championed a defense of the old Russian system were assigned such titles thugs and enemies of the state.

There have been some excellent offerings out of Russia which help us gain a behind the scenes look at life in the time of the Whites and the Reds, and then moving beyond there and into the 1920s-1940s period of Soviet life. The phrases "the state" and "enemy of the state" are picked up in the movie listed here and when you think about it, in reality it was the Communists who were the revolutionaries against the state and not the other way around.

It seems to me that movies past the late 80s tend to take just the opposite view. That is natural because the people had thrown aside the shameless and useless Soviet system and there was a vacuum in culture, society, and the human heart. That vacuum was easiest filled in the dream of a Russia returned to her "rightful" place on the world stage and as a regional and world power. (If you have to wonder about the "why" of Vladimir Putin, there's your sign.)

Newer films "did a 180" as we say. It was as if movie directors and screenwriters did an about face (much like their leaders who were Communists one day and freedom loving democrats the next) and it wasn't long before the Reds were the villains and anything anti Soviet deemed an expression of freedom.

The media treatment of the Whites in most cases has not changed and perhaps never will. Today's generations of writers and producers learned only one side of that story and those who fought against Communist oppression in the era of 1918-1930s will for the most part will never be rehabilitated.

Some themes in these movies legitimately challenge some Western ways of thinking while other themes are generally falsehoods. An example: in the movie The Sixth the chief of the police reminds his subordinated that you simply don't line "enemies of the state" against a wall without a trial first. His reasoning was that "we're the state, not a gang." Well, the Soviets had not at that time (1918-1920) fully carried out their revolution nor had the civil war been won. They were the "thugs" and "gangs" making a revolution against the state, not vice versa. But it was effective propaganda.

Films produced past the late 1980 begin to show us different perspectives on life during the revolution. Writers and directors could show other versions of the story without fear of being sent of to a Gulag or thrown in a local prison. At the same time Books and other media forms began to tell Russians the story of what I sometimes call the "lost Russian history."

A very fine contribution in my estimation is "Admiral" filmed in 2008. It is the story of White commander Alexander Kolchak as he transitioned from a hero in the Imperial Navy to outcast and enemy of the state during the revolution.

This is a promo trailer but perhaps you can find it on YouTube; search for Admiral / Адмиралъ by poster IgorAdmiral for the version with English subtitles.

Yet another is "The Agony" from 1974 telling the story of the revolution. Find it at YouTube although the treatment of the subject ranges from professional to agonizingly amateurish during the film.

Your comments, observations and movie postings on this general topic are welcome.

The Soviet view of its role in Germany at the end of the war is better understood with the assistance of films like Alexander der Kleine, made in 1981:
Kind of cool watching Russian soldiers tooling around Germany in an American Jeep.

Матч - Russian Movie
« Reply #105 on: June 23, 2012, 02:11:41 PM »
Downloaded it, no subs tho and CBA with Russian anymore...

Looks a good move, based on real events also portrayed in the laughable but classic 'Escape to Victory', except the reality is it was a Kiev team the played the German Wehrmacht and won, and lost as well by being shot after the game. Still, Swings i Roundabwts as they says in Wales...

Here's a Utube link wot neva works for me so i'm doing them all...

I should add the newly PC Ukes have banned the movie during Euro 2012 so as not to upset the Germans.......

Russia's new Minister of Culture has asked TV stations not to air the movie СЛУЖУ СОВЕТСКОМУ СОЮЗУ "I Serve the Soviet Union." Apparently in his view the story is not complimentary to the Stalin era and the memory of the Soviet period.

In case you'd like to watch, here is it:

The Prisoner of the Caucasus is an important movie to help understand the tension in that part of Russia today.

A good film, The End of St. Petersburg.

And about the Hermitage, The Russian Ark. Underated but wonderful. Anyone who wants to understand Russia needs to see this movie.

Curious if anyone has seen 'The Seagull' oddly enough set in New England? In a way though this makes sense.
I always have liked A. Benning as an actress.

One of the last films made in the Soviet period Come and See from 1985. Filmed in Belarus spoken in Belarusian, Russian and German, it depicts the horrors of the 2nd World War. The little bits that I have seen are realistic and disturbing.

The film was restored in 2017 and re-released in 2020.
