Russian word of the Day
« on: April 11, 2008, 09:59:14 PM »
Jared has suggested that we have a separate thread for the Vocabulary, Word for the Day.  Its a great idea so here we go and enjoy the thread!

Many of these posts will be from www.masterrussian.com, but that doesn't mean that all of them must.  To help us learn here are a couple of housekeeping items:

1- If you know the case (such as in nouns) please note it so we can learn how to use it in sentences correctly.  If a verb, and you know whether perfective or imperfective, please note that also.

2- This is a family thread and words in bad taste will be deleted.

Have fun!

In response to a long time ago request from Jared, I'd like to bring back the "Word of the Day" concept.  Jared, Manny and Chris have suggested separate threads and that seems like the best idea, thanks to each of you for your input.  I'll try to see if we can add the audio enhanced plugin from either Transparent language or from Declan Software as they have awesome vocal with audio.

Until we can figure that out however, we'll start here for now.

We'll try for 4-5 words per week at approximately one daily and then allow you to review over the weekend.

Word for Friday, 06 February 2009:

бабочка = butterfly  (noun)

"bah-bich -ka"

A trick: Say "BAH-bitch-ka" and be pretty darn close.  :chuckle:

Plural: "BAH-bich -ki" = butterflies

Practice and get it right because if you aren't careful it may end up sounding a lot like the word for grandmother, бабушка.

Here is a link to listen to the word, but remember it changes daily so to hear it you must link today: http://www.transparent.com/wotd/ Scroll down just slightly and you'll see the "Russian" version and you can click and play.

Mendy, my Russian is not nearly up to your standards so I hesitate to
question the pronunciation.

I think it is said like this bah bah chka

It does sound a lot like babuska which should not be confused with pushka
which is a bid cannon or gun. In my early days I messed up and called an old woman
a Pushka my GF at the time laughed until she had tears.

I just tried the word on my wife, and she didn't get it as I pronounced it wrong.  :D

The first "BAH" must be kinda blurted out, but the "BAAH-bitch-ka" is correct. Emphasis at the front of the word.

As Russian spelling is usually WYSIWYG in construction, бабичка, rather than бабочка would make more sense to me, but there you go.

Manny, thanks for trying it on Ladagirl!  You are a very brave man.  tiphat

Beeel, I understand why you would say "I think it is said like this bah bah chka" and I'd have the same conclusion.  It shows your excellent progess in understanding grammar too because you have correctly noticed that with the first syllable stressed on the "a", normally then the "o" in syllable two would indeed be converted to an "ah."

This however is another of those Russian "exceptions" as in some cases the unstressed "o" can take on the sound we equate with "i."  So can "a" in some cases, but thats an even more confusing topic.

I don't know if our members have found the link, but probably the best way to learn this word is to play it over and over on the audio and try to perfect it as much as possible by saying it along with the Russian speaker.

If we can make it sound like the native speaker, then we've accomplished learning no matter how the posts write the phonetics!   :THUB:

Thanks Mendy

Mendy I tried the link and the Russian word of the day was "serious".  When spoken in Russian this word sounds like "seriously" in English spoken with a thick Russian accent.

WC, that is why we're taking weekends off to review the Monday thru Friday works.  :)  This site changes the word each day and on days where they're really tough I'll have some alternatives.

Yes, серьёзный is one serious mouthful!  Pun intended.   Its a twister because you have to do take that c and pronounce it like "ceh" instead of "ehs" while at the same time ramming it hard up against the e (ye) at which time you take the "r" (p) and remembering than in this word the e is a "yo" (ё) so that 2nd syllable, which comes at you with lightening speed has a "roz" sound and by that time your trucking full speed into the 3rd syllable and whew, I get tired just thinking about it!  But with practice we'll get there.

It is gratifying that we have so many members interested in improving our langauge skills. I know the ladies will appreciate your efforts.  tiphat

Word for Tuesday, 10 February 2009

The word today is: варенье

which means "jam" as in a fruit jam made for putting on bread.

There are two keys for speaking this word so that a Russian can understand what your're saying...
1- Trill that "r" (p)!
2- Remember that "e" is "yeh" especially at the end of the word its prominent as "ye."

"vah-ren-yeh" (trill the r)

Follow this link where (Today only) it's pronounced by a native Russian speaker.
