Maybe I don't have what it takes to be a critic because often my aim is to support the Arizona Russian/Ukrainian community.  So when it comes to reviewing the Samarkand Restaurant, I'm more of an Ambassador than critic.  But not without reason:  my daughters love the salads, the marianated cucumbers-onions-mushrooms, the marinated tomatoes, the seafood kabob skewers.....the whole works.  My family also loves the Uzbek bread which is baked at a local Uzbek bakery in North Phoenix.

This place is casual, you can wear a suit but you'll feel out of place.  They serve some beer but oddly with the exception of a few Russian beers most are American or Mexican beers.  Of course if you don't like their beer you can brave the traffic across the intersection to the little Russian food Market (across the street) buy from a very nice selection of Russian beers and bring it back with you.

Our family thinks the food is just fine.  Make sure you try the seabass and the lamb skewers.  Those are my personal favourites.  The salmon skewers aren't bad, either.

Ever wonder what folks eat in Uzbekistan? Well, then, Samarkand is your place. Run by two Uzbek expats, Samarkand serves killer kebabs, everything from lamb chops and chicken to captain fish (our sea bass) and salmon. In addition to the skewers, you can order from a list of salads, including carrot salad, mushroom salad, and something called funchoza, made with Chinese rice noodles. For dessert, there’s hot tea made with a mixture of black and green tea leaves, and sweet cakes of ground walnuts. Yum. All hearty, delicious and very cheap.

Since I already mentioned the Russian Food Market across the street, might as well plug the store next door to it--the Russian Imperial Home store.  It's mainly Russian items for the kitchen from china to glassware to teapots and teasets to knives and utensils.  Make sure to say a hearty Russian hello to the staff--all 4 owners are cousins and very friendly.  They immigrated to America as part of a large wave of Russian Jews who left Uzbekistan in the 1980s.  Phoenix has a hot desert climate similiar to the Uzbek climate and they love it here.  They sell some very nice glass and stemware from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria too.

This store is a GREAT place to take a newly arrived bride and allow her to customize the kitchen with some items which will make her feel very much at home.  And isn't that what it's all about!

On some nights, our pianist plays dramatic gypsy music and flourishes of Tchaikovsky; other nights, Russian romances drift over the dining room. Sometimes a night can become an impromptu concert. Set in Newton Center, the Cafe St. Petersburg offers Russian hospitality and culinary excellence in all its details. The restaurant opened in April of 1993 in Brookline, by the owners Ludmila and Natan Slezinger. In 2005 they found a new home for the restaurant in Newton Center. Together they created an atmosphere of aristocratic dining with classic cuisine, with the warm feeling that you are dining at your aristocratic grandmother’s table.
Mrs. Slezinger learned many of her specialties from her mother-inlaw, Galina Zelenskaya. It was a special relationship.

Cafe St. Petersburg is frequented by artists, writers, musicians, actors, politicians from Russia and around the world. Mr. Slezinger is well-known in Boston community and is also a respected theatre producer in Russia. His friends and business partners love to come to our restaurant and sometimes a night can become an impromptu concert or a poetry reading.

I live in the East Tennessee Region, so naturally I got excited when I saw that the first one you have on the list is Verdi's in Atlanta.  However, I checked them out and they appear to be an Italian restaurant.

On some nights, our pianist plays dramatic gypsy music and flourishes of Tchaikovsky; other nights, Russian romances drift over the dining room. Sometimes a night can become an impromptu concert. Set in Newton Center, the Cafe St. Petersburg offers Russian hospitality and culinary excellence in all its details. The restaurant opened in April of 1993 in Brookline, by the owners Ludmila and Natan Slezinger. In 2005 they found a new home for the restaurant in Newton Center. Together they created an atmosphere of aristocratic dining with classic cuisine, with the warm feeling that you are dining at your aristocratic grandmother’s table.
Mrs. Slezinger learned many of her specialties from her mother-inlaw, Galina Zelenskaya. It was a special relationship.

Cafe St. Petersburg is frequented by artists, writers, musicians, actors, politicians from Russia and around the world. Mr. Slezinger is well-known in Boston community and is also a respected theatre producer in Russia. His friends and business partners love to come to our restaurant and sometimes a night can become an impromptu concert or a poetry reading.
